Meet Jess and welcome her to our tribe! Jess initially studied forensic chemistry at Pace University and immediately took an interest in Anatomy. That paired with having been a former athlete, always active and very passionate about fitness she sought after solace in yoga to soothe injuries caused by over exertion. What was supposed to be just a complementary activity accidentally turned into a full-blown love affair with a much deeper connection beneath the surface. Jess is certified in Yoga (many modalities), Nidra Meditation, Barre and Cycle !

Why CORE 95 (and no I didn’t realize the name is also the name of cat food!)

The aim is balance. finding it and maintaining it. I was paddle surfing this winter in a somewhat heavy wave (full disclosure sometimes the one footers are heavy for me) and I hurt my rotator cuff. I was out there in an unfamiliar break, surrounded by unfamiliar people and I was in pain. Fast forward, I am home unable to surf, or plank or lift dishes out of a dishwasher (not the worst thing) or live my life the way I WANT TO LIVE, I become sad, I eat, time passes. Rather than participate in my own activities I get caught up in becoming a spectator (aka a mom). I watch my children’s sports with vigor, I don’t have my own sport since I am on the DL and I find myself hyper interested in the sport of wrestling and lacrosse. BALANCE was not something I had. Eventually after googling “how to help heal a torn rotator cuff and avoid surgery at ALL COSTS” I come across an article in the NY Times, I forget the title but the basic gist was, my shoulder, it was injured because my core was not strong. I was pulling the wave with my shoulder, not using my core. A few weeks later my daughter rolled her ankle in lacrosse. Again Kelly Google Doctor Martinsen (smile if you are a Google Doc....pun intended..) discovered that if her core is stronger she may be able to get back to lacrosse faster. CORE. It was everywhere for me. I told my partner Shannon, If we want this studio to truly help people we have to focus on core. Not in search of six pack abs (well maybe), but instead to search for the strength and balance that the core provides your whole body. 95, well we love heat, I believe in sweating and feel disappointed if I don’t sweat when working out, I want to pour out the old dirty water in my cells, so that I can replace them with clean water. 95 degrees is a temperature that has allowed me to get the work out in that I desire, with the sweat I need. I felt if I couldn’t work out the way I wanted (due to injury), I wouldn’t go to the class. 95 degrees, will allow our clients to choose one of three modifications for every exercise to obtain the perfect exercise for their needs. “But” said Shannon ”after all that hard work, we can’t just leave the studio, it would feel incomplete”. We needed to balance the workout. The fire would need some peace. So the studio will always end classes with a three to five minute mediation. That is the story of how Core 95 came to be. We did everything EXCEPT Google check our business name (Oh the irony, if it isn’t a health ailment I don’t Google it???). Found out a few days ago that Core 95 is also....yup a cat food....
