‼️SEWAGE SPILL IN NAVESINK RIVER

On the morning of March 24th, COA was alerted to a Fair Haven Borough notification about a sewer pipe break earlier that day from several town residents. The sewage was spilling into the river near the Shrewsbury River Yacht Club. The incident was reported by an alert resident.

Fair Haven implemented its emergency response plan which engaged the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) and the Two Rivers Water Reclamation Authority (TRWRA). The response team acted quickly to minimize and contain the sewage spill and to repair the pipe—with TRWRA working well into the night—to restore service.

👏OUTSTANDING RESPONSE

COA commends Fair Haven’s citizens for their watchful eyes, the township’s leadership and NJDEP’s quick response to the incident, as well as for the fast repair by TRWRA. This serves as an excellent model for the “no blame game” approach with excellent cooperation and communication to quickly solve problems.

Repairs were completed by around 11pm on Tuesday evening. Water samples were collected by NJDEP on Tuesday evening and by COA’s community scientists on Wednesday; samples were analyzed in the NJDEP lab. Results of the community monitoring showed f***l coliforms, which measure shellfish harvest quality, of 1900 cfu/100 mL and Enterococcus, which measures recreation use, of 290/100 mL.

For context, pathogen criteria for shellfish are more stringent than for human exposure because shellfish is eaten raw. Shellfish can be harvested for direct sale to a certified dealer if the geometric mean of f***l coliforms is less than 14 cfu/100mL (f***l coliforms). For public health like swimming the safe standard is 104 cfu/100mL (enterococcus).

⚠️ Harmful algal blooms (HABs) are dangerous algae overgrowths in freshwater and coastal waters that produce toxins harmful to people, pets, fish, shellfish, and wildlife.

Warm, calm waters and nutrients from fertilizer runoff create perfect conditions for HABs. One way NJ has tackled this is through the 2011 Healthy Lawns Healthy Waters Law, which regulates fertilizer use to protect our waterways. Read more about the law and best practices for fertilizer management in our March newsletter!

🪿NJDEP's Fish and Wildlife division is currently monitoring an outbreak of suspected bird flu, with approximately 4,370 dead or sick birds reported to the DEP as of March 3rd, 2026.

If you notice a sick or dead animal that you believe has been infected, we encourage you to report your findings through the NDJEP Wild Bird Disease Reporting Form through the link below.

If you have to remove a carcass yourself, please remember these 3 tips:

1. Wear personal protective equipment such as gloves, a mask, and eye protection.

2. Use tools like a shovel to handle the carcass instead of touching it directly. Double-bag the bird, securely close the bag, and place it in a bin safe from pets and other wildlife.

3. Clean up. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water after handling.
