The MarathonChiro - Part 7

The Training Window

The sh*t just got real.

Yes, it did. Perhaps not the most eloquent expression but in the athlete's mindset, it resonates absolute truth and clarity.

18 weeks to the start line.

Are you doing your part?

This is a calibrated process of endurance build up and succession. It cannot be completed overnight. Cramming last minute will not save you for the final exam.

It all starts now.

The 2025 Chicago Marathon start time is 122 days, 19 hours, 53 minutes and 30 seconds at the time of sharing my thoughts here.

Every day counts now. Every session has purpose. The objective is to cross the finish line.

However, before the finish line is 26.2 miles from the start point. And training is the process every runner endures and completes to equally build up mentally and physically for the mission at hand.

The 2025 Chicago Marathon website has now updated the Nike Training Manual. And it provides a step-by-step process to covering those 18 training weeks efficiently.

I will not be covering Nike's content here. If you are serious about becoming a marathon finisher, you will download the updated training PDF manual on your own. That is your responsibility.

What I will do is share my thoughts from time to time on Nike's presented information. And here is a quick tip.

After you download the PDF file and open it, go to page 17 "18 Weeks To Go" summary sheet and scan the Q code at the bottom. It will direct your smart phone to the Nike App that corresponds to the manual. Install it on your smart phone, create an account and follow the instructions. I am doing this as well.

Remember, this is voluntary. It is up to you. Training is difficult but not impossible. The key is efficiency. And the tools are in place for your success. I encourage you to use them.

The online link to the manual can be found in the comment section.

If I can do it, so can you.

The MarathonChiro - Part 6

Pop quizzes. Midterms. Final Examination.

School and marathon preparation can be rather synonymous.

Every scheduled training session resembles taking a "pop quiz" in class.

Books closed. Pencil sharpened. Eyes on your own paper, please.

Let the quiz begin.

And that is more or less the mental approach toward an outdoor running training session.

It points out where you are at with your training - the good, the bad and the ugly.

And just like a pop quiz, its grade is not terribly consequential to your overall final score. However, the score does reflect your current "in the moment" capability.

A valuable study tool is a smart watch with a running app, such as Strava. It will record pertinent vital signs, along with your pacing in mile increments.

You can note your progress on those dreaded hill climbs in a strong headwind. The new AI tool will even digest all the information obtained into an overall assessment.

These training sessions build into scheduled "midterms". For my training, the "midterms" are half-marathons (normally situated in Chicago to acclimate for the marathon) to better evaluate progress while running in race conditions.

This includes hundreds of other runners sharing the course along with amenities such as hydration and medic stations normally spaced out approximately every 1.5 mile.

In 2018, I even participated in the CARA sponsored 20-mile prep run on Chicago's famous Lakefront Trail as a final tune-up.

This was critical for my training as I discovered that my footwear needed an upgrade (a future topic) to better physically cope with the distance along with the added value of wearing calf compression sleeves.

Without that 20 miler, I wouldn't have upgraded my gear. And that might have made a difference between success and failure at completing my first marathon.

And the final examination of training?

The marathon itself.

Adrenaline will only carry an unprepared runner for so long. And you cannot cram on the night before to complete the 26.2. It takes several months of dedicated training.

Your study guide? The Nike Training Manual that can be downloaded on the Chicago Marathon website. Just do it!

Again:
Pop quizzes: 3 miles and many more during the training cycle
Mid-terms: local half-marathons (13.1 miles)
Final examination: the big 26.2

If I can do it, so can you.

The MarathonChiro - Part 5

The training window.

Finishing the 26.2 requires everything you got. And that includes the preparation. There is no sugar coating it. This is hard work.

The Chicago Marathon is scheduled every Columbus weekend's Sunday. What you complete in training is all you bring to Grant Park on that early morning.

Word salad bravado on social media will not get the job done. What does work is all those nitty gritty training sessions marked down on your schedule.

And those sessions are sacred. Make no mistake about it. Each training segment must have purpose and focus.

The word that must be eliminated from self-talk vocabulary is "too".

Too tired.
Too sore.
Too stiff.
Too hot.
Too cold.
Too early
Too late.
Too sunny.
Too dark.
Too rainy.
Too snowy.
Too foggy.
Too humid.
Too hungry.
Too bloated.

Scheduled training is going to church time. Mandatory. No excuses.

A daily 5 miler on the books? Great. You will be at church on time. Your place of worship is 2.5 miles away from your starting point.

So, you go to church.

And you hit the pivot (or the loop half-way point).

Then you return home.

When in the training window, I commit to the scheduled distance. The "how do I feel" inner self-talk is irrelevant. It cannot compute. I get it done when scheduled.

Outside of your personal procrastination demons (and we all have them), there are going to be negative outward influences that will attempt to steal the time away from your training.

Remember, that time is precious. The clock toward the start line date is always ticking forward. It is sacred.

Nobody interrupts church time.

Yes, that is the mindset. And it must be as uncompromising as possible.

Do emergencies come up? Yes. Then adjust accordingly.

But those are rare instances.

Focus on the 99.99% of potential productivity.

And that will carry you to the finish line.

The MarathonChiro - Part 4

Perhaps you have been running a short while. Nothing spectacular in terms of distance or pace. Just doing whatever and whenever that the mood strikes in any given moment.

And now you are registered in a marathon.

Everything has changed.

"Going for a run" has now been transformed into a purposeful training session. Perhaps for 16 weeks. Or the average at 20 weeks. Maybe even longer.

Me? It is a year-round personal commitment.

But it does change. You become refocused. And it can be a little intimidating.

Feeling a bit of fear? Good. That means you recognize the challenge that lies ahead.

Whether you train solo or in an equally committed running group (highly recommended and if you are in the Chicagoland area, do yourself a favor and visit the CARA website), there is only one constant companion during your training.

Yes. Just one you can count on completely, during all those miles of hard work.

Running mates come and go. Especially for the 26.2 because people give up and quit without notice. Or they get injured. Stuff happens all the time.

But there is one who will never betray your dedication. It will always be present and accountable. It will assist in your completion of every training step without fail. It will challenge and push you to fullest potential on every climb in the worst headwind, day or night and never skip weekends. And it keeps perfect harmonized pace.

Who, you ask?

The ground beneath your moving feet. You will learn to appreciate its presence and companionship as you experience the pendulum swings of success and failure during training.

Trail, concrete, asphalt or the vulcanized rubber on the treadmill are all forms of your closest ally. Appreciate its presence. Because ultimately it will guide you to the finish line.

Sound corny? It probably is. But this is not exactly a rational pursuit. And when the miles add up more and more, you will understand.

If I can do it, so can you.

The MarathonChiro - Part 3

You do not have to run a marathon.

Attitude is everything regarding this endeavor.

More correctly stated, you get to run a marathon. It is a privilege to participate.

And yes, you apply to participate. The start line is not a guarantee for everyone.

The next truth bomb is a surprise to some.

You pay to run a marathon. And not just monetarily. You will sacrifice personal and career time in lieu of training obligations.

The 2025 Chicago Marathon registration fee was $245 for USA based participants and $255 for those outside the USA.

Selection process for the following year's marathon begins with an online application that opens on the marathon website a few weeks after the last race.

The Chicago Marathon is always the Sunday of the Columbus Weekend holiday in October.

Unless you are an invited professional/top amateur or a legacy runner (more on that later but for now do not worry about this option), you will enter through a lottery system.

For instance, in order to participate in this year's Chicago Marathon (2025), you would have had to apply last fall (2024) and receive acceptance notification along with your payment in early December (2024).

Yes, it is like applying for college in the sense of completing an application and waiting for an acceptance!

Until I earned legacy runner status, I entered 3 lottery selection processes (2018, 2019, 2020) and was accepted twice. In 2019, I was not a lottery selection.

If you are denied a lottery entry, your remaining participation choice is joining a charity foundation. You will still pay the registration fee in order to receive a race bib and raise money on behalf of that charity.

Charity bibs are a bit of extra work. You will fund raise. And you will have to meet minimum dollar amounts that will be collected throughout your training window. If you did not raise the minimum amount, your credit card is charged. Each charity has its own fund-raising expectations but expect to raise a few thousand dollars.

In 2019, I was a charity runner for Red Cross. And it was an honor to run for this first-class organization.

As you can see, you really have to want to pursue a marathon challenge. Mind you, I am only referencing the Chicago Marathon, a world major event. There are many other marathons to check out and investigate.

It is not a free ride for anyone to the start line.

In the comment section below, I will include the link to the Chicago Marathon registration information page.

If I can do it, so can you.

The MarathonChiro - Part 2

A marathon is 26.2 miles.

More than once, I have been approached by patients with a desire to run a marathon yet not know its distance.

Quite commonly, it is a bucket list quest. And there is nothing wrong with that.

However, you do need to know a few important details.

Such as the actual distance.

It is also rather interesting to note that many of these thrill seekers did not actively run, let alone participate in previous shorter distance races.

My first race was the annual Long Grove Turkey Trot 8K in 2017. And I trained nearly 8 months prior to hitting the start line. It was a "couch to finish line" life experience. Even better, I got to share the moment with my sons.

Afterward, I wanted to pursue a longer distance challenge. And in the year to follow, I completed several half marathons (13.1 miles), eventually leading to the Chicago Marathon later that autumn.

I recognize the bug to stroke off "completed a marathon" from a bucket list. Admittedly, it was in the back of my own mind for several years as "something cool" to partake.

Building up to the marathon by completing shorter distance races personally gave me much needed experience and confidence to tackle the marathon later.

You learn an awful lot about yourself on a racecourse. And it provides feedback on your progress as a runner along with areas of weakness to improve upon.

Whatever the distance, enjoy those finish line moments. It is well earned. And regardless of the distance or course time, be proud of the accomplishment.

If I can do it, so can you.
