Are you experiencing an unplanned pregnancy? You're not alone! Around 40% of pregnancies are unexpected. The important thing is taking the right steps after finding out you're pregnant.

1) Take an additional pregnancy test
Before you make any big decisions, take a second test to confirm that you're pregnant.

2) Schedule a limited OB ultrasound
Set up an ultrasound early on in pregnancy to verify the baby's heartbeat, gestational age, and the location of the pregnancy (make sure it's not ectopic).

3) Explore your options
Not sure what to do next? Don't jump to a quick conclusion! It's ok to take some time to explore what is best for you and your family. Our trained and compassionate advocates are here to listen to you and help you examine what might be best.

We offer all three of these services for free: if cost is the problem, don't let it get in your way! For more information, or to set up an appointment, call or text (320)-874-0124.

Have you heard any of these three myths?

Myth 1: Ultrasounds use radiation
Nope! Unlike an x-ray, which *does* use radiation, ultrasounds use sound waves. You don't have to worry about your baby being exposed to harmful rays at an ultrasound!

Myth 2: You have to go alone
Wrong - in most cases, you can bring your partner, parent, friend, or other support person to an ultrasound appointment.

Myth 3: You need an ultrasound every appointment
No - most healthy pregnancies only need two ultrasounds: a limited OB exam and an anatomy scan. In some cases, more ultrasounds may be necessary, even if the pregnancy is healthy (like in the case of twins/multiples), so don't be afraid if you need more than these two!

Ultrasounds are an important piece of monitoring your baby's health before it is born. Don't believe these myths about them!
We offer free limited OB ultrasounds to qualifying clients! For more information, or to set up an appointment, call or text (320)-874-0124.

Will it go away?

If you've tested positive for an STD, you may be hoping that it'll just run its course and go away. Unfortunately, that isn't the case for most STDs. In most cases, the infection will get worse over time instead of getting better.

Although there are some cases of HPV and HepB where the infection goes away over time, these two diseases can also lead to major health complications if untreated: cancer and chronic liver infections. While there is no cure for either of these diseases, there are treatments for their symptoms or to stop the virus from spreading.

With any STD, it is important to take the disease seriously. Untreated, they can lead to fertility complications, Pelvic Inflammatory Disease, and various cancers. They can also spread, even if there's no symptoms.

Not sure if you have an STD? Get tested! We offer free and confidential STD testing for men and women. For more information, or to set up an appointment, call or text (320)-874-0124.

How can you tell?
If there's a chance you've been exposed to an STD, you might be waiting to see if you show symptoms before you do anything about it. What symptoms should you be looking for?
While the symptoms of different STIs vary, some common ones include:
-Unusual odors
-Unusual discharges
-Sores, warts, or rashes
-Flu like symptoms
You might see symptoms like these, but chances are, you won't. Most often, STDs don't show any symptoms. If there's a chance you've been exposed to an STD, it's super important to get tested - otherwise, you might not know you have one until it's damaged your body. STDs can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease, miscarriages, or cancer.
We offer free testing for the most common STIs. For more information, or to set up an appointment, call or text (320)-874-0124!

Are you a mind-reader?

I didn't think so! However, the skill of empathic accuracy is one that can be practiced and improved. Practicing this concept helps you better understand what the other person is actually feeling, not just assuming it or projecting your own feelings onto them.

You can improve your empathic accuracy by working on these 3 things:
1) Identifying (with specificity) your own emotions - resources like the "Wheel of Emotion" are helpful with this!
2) Engaging in open communication - ask people if what you're sensing is accurate, while being open to correction
3) Working to understand their perspective - instead of assuming that the story in their mind is the same as yours, seek to learn their needs and triggers

Empathic accuracy is necessary during some of life's big seasons: relationship issues, an unplanned pregnancy, or the stress after the baby is born. If you're not in one of those hard seasons, begin to practice now! If you are already in a hard time, it's not too late. Work with your partner to better understand each other; don't just assume.

Need help sorting through your options or next steps in situations like these? We're here to help! We offer free life coaching, or, in the case of an unplanned pregnancy, options counseling. For more information or to set up an appointment, call or text (320)-874-0124.

Do you have a scarcity mindset, or an abundance mindset?

These two different approaches to life are opposite perspectives of one's circumstances - even if the circumstances are the same.

A scarcity mindset that focuses on what you do not have:
"Someone else is doing well, so I won't"
"I'm the only one in this negative situation"
"I'll never get enough of this resource"

Conversely, an abundance mindset focuses on your circumstances with gratitude:
"My day will come"
"I appreciate what I have"
"I'm excited to see others succeed!"

Both mindsets become self-fulfilling prophecies. If you think you will never have enough, you never will. If you think you'll never make it, you won't. If you believe that something better is around the corner, you'll be looking for it when it comes! And if you believe that you you can succeed, then you're one step closer to making it.

Adjusting your mindset takes practice and discipline - don't do it alone! Our life coaches are here to support you and guide you. For more information, or to set up an appointment, call or text (320)-874-0124.

You don't want to give (or receive) the gift that nobody wants: a Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD).
Some Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) can be passed through kissing, including Herpes, Cytomegalovirus (CMV), Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)/mono, syphilis, HPV, and gonorrhea. These are all STIs carried in saliva. The risk of transmission through kissing is lower than through other forms of s*x.
STDs can lead to a number of health problems: Pelvic Inflammatory Disease, miscarriage, blindness in babies, and a lot of pain. Many STDs do not show any symptoms, even if they are present. That's why it's so important to get tested if there's a chance you've been exposed to one!
We offer free and confidential STD testing for men and women! For more information, or to set up an appointment, call or text (320)-874-0124.

How can you help?
Your partner is pregnant - now what? Your support throughout her pregnancy means the world. You can support your pregnant partner by:

1/ Pursuing healthy habits
When a woman is pregnant, she should cut out things like caffeine, smoking, alcohol, and other drugs. These can be harmful to the baby's health. You can support your partner by giving these things up, too. Don't make her sacrifice alone!

2/ Helping her in with her normal things
Your partner also could use help in some of the normal things in your routine. Pregnant women shouldn't mess with cat litter, which can carry an infection called toxoplasmosis. This infection is dangerous to the baby. Also, your partner should avoid heavy lifting. Finally, she may be feeling pretty fatigued - pick up the slack on normal chores that she's too exhausted to do.

3/ Helping her with new things
Not only can you help your partner with normal stuff, but also with new challenges. For instance, she might be pretty nauseous in the first trimester. You can help by taking care of the things that make her *especially* nauseous, getting her crackers to help with the morning sickness, or making/ordering food when she's not feeling well.

4/ Being honest about where you're at
You can support your partner by kindly and openly discussing how you're doing. Don't leave her in a guessing game. Tell her if you're excited, listen to her joys and fears, be honest about the things you're nervous about. Strong relationships are built on loving communication!

As a dad, you are stepping into a super important role. Even before the baby is born, you can play a massive part in supporting your partner's physical and emotional wellbeing (and therefore the child's!). We know that it's a big change for you, too, so we're here to educate and encourage you. For more information about our services for dads, call/text (320)-874-0124.

Bleeding in the first trimester can mean a lot of things. Light spotting is common, but actual bleeding - a flow of blood more than a spot here or there - is worth talking to your healthcare provider about.
Spotting may happen because of the embryo implanting or because of changes in your hormones. Bleeding can be symptomatic of more serious issues, like an ectopic or molar pregnancy, an STI, or a miscarriage.
If you're concerned about the bleeding or spotting that you are experiencing, it's ok to talk with your healthcare provider about it! If it is rooted in one of the more serious health issues, it's important that they be taken care of right away.
Do you have other questions about what you're experiencing during pregnancy? We're here to help! We offer free pregnancy and childbirth classes to help you feel more confident as a parent. For more information, or to set up an appointment, call or text (320)-874-0124.

Tummy time is so important!

Your baby needs time spent laying on his tummy (while he's awake and someone is watching!). This time helps your baby's muscles in his upper body grow stronger, aids in his motor skills development, and prevents flat spots on the back of his head. This muscle development will help him sit, crawl, and even walk!
Babies can start having tummy time quite soon after birth - you only need to wait a day or two. Start with a couple short sessions a day (3-5 minutes), and work up as your baby ages. By the time your baby is 2 months old, he should be getting 15-30 minutes of tummy time a day.

The first months of your baby's life are so important to his development! Tummy time is an important part of strengthening his body and stimulating his mind.
We care about you and your baby! We offer free classes, resources, and guidance to help you through pregnancy and your child's first years. For more information about all of our free services, call/text (320)-874-0214 or comment BABY!

The frequency that your baby will need a bath changes as they age and grow more active. In their first few weeks (before the stump of the umbilical cord falls off), give your baby a sponge bath a few times a week. As they get older and grow dirtier, they may need more frequent baths.
As a general rule, if your baby is dirty, clean it! Make sure to clean in the hard to reach spots, like neck folds, armpits, and behind the ears.

Some babies find baths to be relaxing or fun - they *can* be a good way to calm down a fussy baby.

Mayo recommends bathing your baby three times a week. More than that can lead to dry skin. Make sure to use lotion if you're bathing your baby often!

Do you have other questions about raising a baby? We're here to help! We offer free parenting classes to help you through your baby's first years. For more information, or to set up an appointment, call or text (320)-874-0124.

Is it worth it to buy my baby her own bed?
Yes! It isn't safe for your baby to share a bed with you. There are actually a LOT of health risks associated with infants sharing their parents' bed, including suffocation and strangulation. Babies under 4 months of age are especially at risk for Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) in this environment.
You can protect your baby by investing in a separate bed for them - a crib, bassinet, or even a port-a-crib.
Safe beds have these characteristics:
-Little to no fluffy bedding (pillows, quilts, etc).
-No gaps that the baby can get stuck in
-A firm mattress
Can't afford safe sleeping arrangements for your baby? We're here to help! Through the generous gift of a foundation, qualifying parents can earn a free port-a-crib. For more information, call/text (320)-874-0124.

What are the benefits?
As you prepare for your baby, you may be trying to decide between breastfeeding or giving your baby formula. While the correct choice may vary from person to person, breastfeeding does have some definite benefits.
1) Bonding - the bonding an infant experiences can help them socially and behaviorally later in life
2) Long-Term Health Benefits - breastfeeding can lower your child's risk of obesity, type 2 diabetes, and leukemia (among other things)
3) Stronger Immune System - breastfed babies are at lower risk of SIDS, resirapitory diseases, asthma, and ear infections
Breastfeeding can also benefit the mother, reducing the risk of several types of cancer, type 2 diabetes, and high blood pressure. It's also cheaper than formula.
Not sure what option is right for your family? We offer free classes and consultations on breastfeeding. For more information or to set up an appointment, call/text (320)-874-0124.
