Overcoming seasonal depression

With less sunshine and natural light and colder temperatures, you might be feeling some “winter blues” and changes in mood. About 5% of the population has seasonal affective disorder, or SAD, a type of depression that is characterized by its recurrent seasonal pattern, with symptoms lasting about four to five months per year. The predictable onset of SAD - in the fall or early winter - typically resolves, even untreated, by spring.

With shorter days and a decline in sunshine and natural light, you might already be feeling some “Winter blues” and changes in mood. B*H board-certified psychiatrist Dan Fisher, MD offers his tips for seasonal affective disorder.

World Stroke Day (October 29th) also serves as a timely reminder of the increased risk of stroke among people living with atrial fibrillation (AFib or AF). An estimated seven million Americans are estimated to be affected by AF – an irregular heartbeat that can feel like a quivering heart. People with AF have a five times greater risk of stroke than those with normal heart rhythms.

Boulder Heart is proud to offer patients the WATCHMAN FLX™ Pro Left Atrial Appendage Closure (LAAC) Device, the only FDA-approved implant proven to reduce stroke risk in people with atrial fibrillation (AFIB) that is not caused by a heart valve problem.

Boulder Heart's cardiac specialists - led by Srinivas Iyengar, MD, one of Colorado's most experienced WATCHMAN physicians with a 100% success rate - are the only team providing this innovative, minimally invasive procedure in Boulder County, at Foothills Hospital in Boulder. The WATCHMAN FLX device closes off an area of the heart called the left atrial appendage (LAA) to keep harmful blood clots that can form in the LAA from entering the blood stream and potentially causing a stroke. By closing off the LAA, the risk of stroke may be reduced and, over time, patients may be able to stop taking their blood thinner. The latest-generation technology has a new design to help treat more patients safely and effectively to ensure the best long-term outcomes.

Curious about breast imaging?
Mammograms excel at spotting changes and calcifications in breast tissue, while ultrasounds are great for distinguishing solid masses from cysts. Both play vital roles in breast health! 💖

Late last month, B*H’s Foothills Hospital performed the 200th WATCHMAN procedure. Experienced interventional cardiologist Srinivas Iyengar, MD and his Structural Heart & Valve team, including Molly Ware, MD, performed the milestone procedure and successfully implanted the WATCHMAN FLX Pro™ Left Atrial Appendage Closure (LAAC) Device.

Dr. Iyengar – Boulder Heart’s Director of Structural Heart & Interventional Cardiology – has a 100% WATCHMAN success rate. This FDA-approved implant is designed to deduce stroke risk and serve as an alternative to the lifelong use of blood thinners for people with atrial fibrillation not caused by a heart valve problem (also known as non-valvular AF).

Congrats to Drs. Iyengar and Ware and the Structural Heart/Cath Lab teams!
