People living with dementia should be recognized and appreciated for the person they still are—at Homewatch, it’s one of our core beliefs. But our culture and media tend to paint a narrow picture of the condition that's only sad and tragic. As dementia advocate Rev. Lynn Casteel Harper writes here, we need new stories:

“There are indeed losses and suffering associated with dementia, experiences that confound and aggrieve… [But] turning a multidimensional phenomenon into a story of unidirectional decline and disappearance, reinforces stigma around cognitive disability…I have seen up close that dementia is not just a decline unto death. It can also involve ascendant humor, compassion and connections beyond the strictly rational. It’s important for us to talk about it, to tell stories about it, to write books and make movies about it. But we need new ways to do so. The good news is that other approaches are emerging, stories that offer multifaceted depictions of dementia, situating the condition and those it affects back on the spectrum of human experience.”

Congratulations to our Care Partner of the Month, Cathy!
Cathy celebrated her 20-year anniversary with Homewatch Caregivers last month! Pictured is Cathy with her long-time client, Virgina.

Share a particularly memorable or heartwarming experience from your time as a caregiver that has stayed with you:

A client I served for ten years had long been in a weekly church circle. I would drive her to the group when she lived at her home. After she moved to an assisted living facility outside Boulder, I began staying with her during their afternoon gatherings. My relationship with her was enriched by my growing friendships with these remarkable women. I treasure those longstanding bonds.

What motivates and inspires you to continue your work as a caregiver after so many years?

Relationships. Seniors have such rich stories and add dimension to my day.

What is something you find helps when you're dealing with caregiver burnout?

I currently don’t experience burnout because I’m down to eight hoursa week with two female clients. When I worked 30 hours, I would talk through problem areas with an office staff member or with a close Homewatch colleague. Having multiple interests outside the job helps keep burnout at bay.

What advice would you give new caregivers starting in the profession based on your extensive experience?

Things I’ve found helpful are studying the new client’s care plan thoroughly before meeting them and continuing to reread it; building trust that you honor their independence while supporting their needs; bringing a positive spirit to your caregiving; making wise choices while grocery shopping after clarifying their food preferences and restrictions; and valuing the relationship you’re developing with them through conversations about their interests and life story.
