In teacher training I covered a range of topics. We dove into specific postures, pranayama, Yamas and Niyamas…. But this topic of protecting and holding space was transformative. Lightbulbs went off in new teachers heads. The notion of holding space in a layered way shed light onto knowing that we (teachers and students) aren’t meant for every space and every student isn’t ready to be in a shared space. Teachers must protect their energy in order to steward a safe and enjoyable space.
As teachers are biggest responsibility isn’t headstands or social media- it’s holding space in a way that’s safe for you and the students.
Some things I do to protect space:
I make eye contact with, greet, and ask each student - regardless if they are new or not- if they have any questions about class.
I leave 15 minutes after class ends. This protects my and the students time and energy.
I encourage students to book private sessions if they need one on one instruction outside of the group setting.
I create low cost and free spaces for students to access me outside of high financial barrier locations. These events have a fixed end time.
I leave the physical spaces that have issues coming from the leadership.
I fully understand teachers and studios are not always operating in the right place. I leave places that are toxic - I don’t stay and try to fix them.
If a student doesn’t like my class - or me- I recommend they try a different teacher or class style.
I keep my spaces calm prior to class. Loud conversations, phone calls, or high energy students may need help settling in.
I have open dialogue with my students about who or what is making them feel unsafe or disturbed in class.
I have hard conversations with coworkers and students.
When you lead with pure intentions you can’t go wrong. I have many more thoughts on the topic of holding and protecting space. What are yours?
