🧠 The Mind-Body Link: Codependency + POTS

✨ POTS in Simple Terms:
POTS is a form of dysautonomia, where your autonomic nervous system has trouble regulating things like heart rate, blood pressure, and blood flow—especially when standing or upright.

✨ High-Functioning Codependency Involves:
* Chronic hypervigilance (scanning for others' needs)
* Constant emotional output with limited rest/recharge
* Suppressed emotions, often leading to internalized stress
* Deep-seated nervous system dysregulation
Now imagine layering that level of nervous system pressure over a body already struggling to regulate its internal systems. It’s like driving a car with faulty brakes while flooring the gas.

🔄 Common Ways Codependency Worsens POTS Symptoms:
1. Overextending Yourself
* Saying yes when your body is screaming no
* Prioritizing others even when you're dizzy, weak, or fatigued

My whole life I’ve experienced these symptoms but I’ve never heard of POTS, not until a couple of years ago. I’ve always had an intolerance for heat and have passed out from overheating my whole life. Basically since I was about 7 years old. That’s the first time I really remember passing out anyways. I didn’t sweat until I was 19 and even now I don’t sweat as much as I should.
Trying to get diagnosed with this is very hard. Even when I passed out 5 years ago and hit my head really hard which led me to getting my bloodwork done it was never even something that was mentioned. They just said that my heartbeat is irregular and causes heart palpitations.
My new doctor now even just said that since I learned so much about my thyroid and actually reversed my diagnosis that he believes if I think I have POTS then I probably do. Not much help at all. Still deciding if I should try and get some tests done to actually get diagnosed or if I should just keep learning myself and try to get this to reverse too. It is very hard but I do believe it is curable.
Like most health issues that we have I do believe that this is from trauma. I was born into trauma and from birth I’m sure I have experienced some kind of abuse, whether it was physical, mental or sexual. Sadly though I don’t think it starts there. Our family history is stored in our DNA and we have that constantly showing up in our present life. It might be an issue with your health, your job, your
relationship— any issue that disrupts your sense of safety, peace, security, or well- being.
Since I don’t speak to my family and only have contact with my father it makes it very hard to learn about my family history.

I highly recommend this book- It Didn’t
Start with You, How Inherited Family Trauma Shapes Who We Are and How to End the Cycle by Mark Wolynn.
I feel like I learned a lot and with some of the exercises in this book I’m hoping that I can help my body release some of this trauma that is not mine to hold. That and learning to live without being in survival mode all the time. I’ve developed high functioning codependency and I believe that also keeps me in survival mode.
