Today marks Lymphedema Awareness Day, a significant occasion to honor the journey of those affected by lymphedema. Founded by Saskia RJ Thiadens, this day aims to raise awareness and celebrate the strides made in lymphology. With the growth of research and resources, we're witnessing a transformation in the support available for patients. Exciting developments are on the horizon in my practice, including new durable medical equipment services (pneumatic compression, post-mastectomy support) for those struggling with lymphedema.

Until 2015, for most of modern medicine, the brain was treated like a VIP room: protected, enclosed, and somehow separate from the rest of the body’s “messy” fluid world.
And then… we discovered something that changed the entire story. 🌊🌊🧠
Around the last decade, researchers began mapping fluid pathways in the brain that behave like a waste-clearing, circulation-supporting system, a kind of lymphatic-esque housekeeping route that helps keep brain tissue clean, responsive, and resilient. One of the landmark studies demonstrated a “paravascular” pathway where cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) moves alongside blood vessels, exchanges with the fluid between brain cells, and helps clear solutes, including amyloid-beta. Lymphatic drainage is gaining awareness in wellness circles, sparking curiosity and skepticism. My goal here is to distinguish between evidence-based benefits and exaggerated claims.

First off, let's talk about what the lymphatic system does and does not do for us!

Lymphatic drainage refers to a therapeutic massage technique that aims to stimulate the lymphatic system, facilitating the removal of waste products and excess fluids from the body. While lymphatic drainage has been studied to some extent, particularly in the context of certain medical conditions, it’s essential to distinguish scientifically proven benefits from those often claimed in popular wellness discourses.

Scientifically Proven Benefits:

1. Reduction of Lymphedema: One of the most well-documented uses of lymphatic drainage is in the management of lymphedema, particularly in post-surgical or post-radiation patients (e.g., breast cancer survivors). Studies show that manual lymphatic drainage can help reduce swelling and improve comfort.

2. Improvement in Circulation: Lymphatic drainage massage can enhance blood circulation. Some research indicates that it may help in the movement of lymph, thus contributing to a healthier circulatory system overall.
