Our resolution is to provide the best possible care for our community! Did you make any New Year's resolutions this year?

Did you know? 91% of Americans make fitness-related resolutions every year, but only 8% keep those resolutions. If you're making a fitness goal, there's no better way to achieve it than accountability! A physical therapist is a great accountability partner. Your PT can always tell if you've been doing your exercises, and they can help you make a personalized workout plan that's right for your body. If you'd like to set up an appointment, reach out to us at (303)776-8003 or on our website at longmontphysicaltherapy.com

Did you know? Cases of COVID-19 are on the rise in Boulder county!

The Delta variant of COVID-19 is more infectious and results in more hospitalizations than previous strains of the disease. Further variants are expected to occur in the future, and we have no idea what they will look like.

Vaccination dramatically reduces the risk of prolonged symptoms, hospitalization, and death from COVID-19.

What is occupational therapy, and how is it different from PT?

Occupational therapy helps people do what they want and need to do. Occupational therapy practitioners enable people of all ages to live life to its fullest by helping them promote health, and prevent—or live better with—injury, illness, or disability.

So how does it differ from physical therapy? The most basic difference between physical therapy and occupational therapy is that a PT focuses on improving the patient's ability to move their body whereas an OT focuses on improving the patient's ability to perform activities of daily living. In other words, an occupational therapist's focus is on adapting the environment and/or task to fit the person.

Common occupational therapy interventions include helping children with disabilities to participate fully in school and social situations, helping people recovering from injury to regain skills, and providing supports for older adults experiencing physical and cognitive changes.

Our Lyons clinic is fortunate enough to have an amazing OT, Jackie Brennan. Jackie is a hand and upper extremity specialist with over 20 years of experience. If you'd like to make an appointment with Jackie, please call (303)823-8813 or visit our website at longmontphysicaltherapy.com

Happy breast cancer awareness month, everyone!

Did you know that regular exercise is associated with higher rates of survival for cancer patients? Your PT can design an exercise program for you with any underlying conditions in mind. Remember: no matter how slow you go, it's still better than sitting on the couch!

You can learn more about how exercise benefits cancer patients and survivors here: https://ascopost.com/issues/may-25-2016/fitness-can-exercise-lengthen-survival-in-patients-with-cancer/

The pandemic has lots of people thinking about intensive care units, but what's the next step for patients after discharge?

Many patients suffer from something called Post-Intensive Care Syndrome (PICS). This umbrella term includes things such as cognitive decline, anxiety, and significant loss of strength and mobility.

Physical therapists play a significant role in the fight against PICS. PT typically begins while the patient is in ICU and continues after discharge.
