Let me start off by saying, Stephanie Fears embodies what Jesus' love looks like.
Stephanie is our Executive Director of Mercy Manor, but she is so much more than a title, she is the heartbeat, love, passion, and fire behind what we do here.
Stephanie's journey began with a pregnancy at the age of 16. She found herself in a cold, institutionalized maternity home away from all family or friends. While there, she made the difficult decision to place her child for adoption in hopes of a brighter future than what she could provide at 16. Her story came full circle, when she was able to reconnect with her son and his family after 20 years, she was even able to dance with him at his wedding!
In 2006, Stephanie volunteered with a local maternity home vastly different from the one she lived in. This home was very warm and loving, more of a family style home than the institutionalized one she was in. Unfortunately, in 2012, legislation changed their laws and did away with the maternity home licensing. Overnight, maternity homes could only accept consenting adults age 18 and over. Minors no longer had an opportunity for this assistance.
The catalyst that started Mercy Manor was that Stephanie wanted to make a place for the teens falling in between the cracks. "It took a while to figure things out and I'm still figuring it out," she laughs.
Despite hitting several unexpected roadblocks, she just kept going with a fire and passion to help those nobody else knew how to help.
Stephanie states, "Many of these young girls come from very traumatic lives, we become responsible for their medical, dental, spiritual, and emotional needs."
While explaining about our young momma's three ages, (her experience age, physical age, and mental age- where their trauma often began), Stephanie said, "Working with minors has been a real challenge at every turn, but they are worth the figuring it out."
Stephanie tearfully says with full conviction, "To narrow it down, the real reason of going through these hard things (beginning Mercy Manor and continuing to grow it) is the Lord wouldn't allow me to say no. He burdened me so hard to look after the population that needed looked over, there was no sleep, no rest, it was so heavy on my heart. I was so defiant with the Lord. I didn't want to leave my job, I loved it. He took that reluctance and turned it to obedience."
Now Mercy Manor is a Ministry that takes care of and supports young mothers and fathers and pours into them spiritually while teaching them to be the parents God has designed them to be.
