If you live with tinnitus, you’ve probably heard someone say, “Try cutting back on caffeine.” But a lot of times, no one explains the why behind that advice.
Here’s what I tell my patients: caffeine can raise blood pressure and cause your blood vessels to tighten a bit. For some people, that may mean less blood flow to the inner ear, and that can make tinnitus more noticeable.
That said, I also see the other side. If you’re a regular coffee (or energy drink) person, cutting back too quickly can trigger withdrawal headaches, irritability, fatigue, and stress, which can make tinnitus feel louder.
If you have tinnitus, have you ever experimented with reducing caffeine (even gradually)? I’d love to hear what you noticed. Did it help, not change a thing, or make it worse at first?
