Human identity is not static. It is neither a fixed trait nor a finished product. Rather, it is an evolving system continually shaped by interaction. Each encounter, relationship, and exposure to another person serves as a catalyst for subtle psychological recalibration.

These recalibrations may be nearly imperceptible in isolation, yet cumulatively they produce profound transformation. In modern language, one might describe this process as a series of “upgrades” or successive versions of the self-emerging through lived experience. Very much the same as how we currently view upgrades to a computer, its operating system or software applications.

Legendary Origins of Tai Chi: Zhang Sanfeng and Daoist Transmission

Long before Chen Village records appear in the 17th century, traditional accounts attribute Tai Chi’s creation to the Daoist monk Zhang Sanfeng, often associated with Wudang Mountain. According to legend, Zhang observed a fight between a snake and a crane. The snake yielded and coiled; the crane struck with precision. From this encounter, he is said to have synthesized principles of softness overcoming hardness, a living embodiment of Yin and Yang theory (Henning, 1994; Wile, 1996)....

Comparing the Three - Although light bulb, flashbulb, and lollipop moments are distinct, they are complementary in the landscape of human experience. Light bulb moments transform the self by providing clarity and insight, flashbulb moments connect us to shared historical and emotional contexts, and lollipop moments transform relationships by creating meaning for others. Each concept represents a unique dimension of human development: cognition, memory, and social connection.

Light Bulb, Flashbulb and Lollipop Moments

Human experiences are filled with defining moments that shape our understanding of ourselves and our relationships with others. Three metaphors that capture different yet equally transformative experiences are the light bulb moment, the flashbulb moment, and the lollipop moment. While all represent instances of change and meaning, their sources and impacts differ substantially. A light bulb moment represents a sudden spark of personal insight or discovery....

My goal is to present an education for holistic health to increase longevity and quality of life (heathspan), that brings awareness to these time-proven methods. With an intent to de-mystify and simplify explanations, hopefully more people can come to realize that we are all accountable for our own well-being.

How to Relax and Breathe Deeper

How do you get the breath to become slower? With a concentrated effort to change your breathing rhythm. Breathing is one of the few bodily rhythms that we can consciously adjust, along with to some extent, sleep and elimination. All of these rhythms directly affect our body’s delicate blood chemistry. However, our breath is the root power in bringing oxygen or in Eastern thought, "chi" or vital life force energy, into our body to nourish it down to the cellular level.

For more than 100 years, the Harvard Grant Study—one of the longest-running studies on human health and happiness—has consistently shown that three factors strongly support well-being and longevity: meaningful relationships, a sense of purpose, and caring for one’s physical and mental health. People thrive when they feel connected to a community, when their lives have direction, and when they actively participate in practices that support their body and mind.

Tai Chi and Qigong offer a unique way to cultivate all three. Practicing together creates a supportive community where people share encouragement and connection. The discipline of learning and refining these arts provides a sense of purpose and personal growth. At the same time, the slow, mindful movements, breathing practices, and mental focus promote physical strength, balance, relaxation, and emotional resilience.

In a world where many people feel isolated and overwhelmed, gathering to practice Tai Chi and Qigong offers something deeply valuable: community, purpose, and a practical path to caring for one’s whole self.

I have 3 weekly group classes during the day (11:30am-12:30pm) in Winter Park, if you care to attend. Or private classes in Wekiva at my home. Discussions and seminars regarding holistic health at your location and others throughout the year.

I enjoy teaching and sharing; it is my ikigai, or something that gives me purpose and meaning. I wish you the best on your journey of pursuing better health, wellness and happiness.

The Grace of Endings

A Reflection on Relationships, Impermanence, and the Wisdom of Final Chapters I have lived long enough, to see many of my personal relationships come to an end. Relationships with family, friends and neighbors. Also, in the workplace, or with casual acquaintances and even with most beloved pets. There is no way to escape the fact that all of our relationships,... good, bad or otherwise......

One Truth, Many Experiences — And the Need for Discernment

There can only be one truth about a particular thing. A tree is a tree. It does not become something else because someone prefers it to be different. It has roots, a trunk, branches, and leaves. It grows according to its nature. Truth, in that sense, is singular. Yet there are countless ways to experience that truth. One person sees shade....

Bounded Choice Through the Lens of the Warrior–Scholar–Sage

Human freedom is not merely the ability to select between options. True freedom depends upon whether those options are real, informed, and unconstrained by coercion. A person may appear to be choosing voluntarily while operating inside a closed psychological system that has already defined what is acceptable, moral, and permissible. This phenomenon is known as bounded choice, a condition in which individuals experience subjective freedom within an objectively restricted framework (Lalich, 2004)....
