Pharmacy Fun Fact

Did you know that one of America’s founding fathers was once a pharmacist? As a young man, Benjamin Franklin worked as an apprentice at a local mercantile store and dispensed medicines and herbs. 🌱 Later in life, helped to establish the first hospital pharmacy in 1751 in Philadelphia. So next time you reach for a Benjamin, remember that this founding father had a whole lot longer of a resume than you might have thought!

Perimenopause

September is Healthy Aging Month, but aging women are often overlooked, especially around perimenopause. 🌿 Perimenopause is the transitional phase leading up to menopause marked by hormonal fluctuations. The experience of perimenopause can be different for each woman, but common symptoms include hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings, sleep disturbances, and changes in libido. Many treatments are available to ease perimenopause symptoms, including hormone replacement therapies, prescription medications, and lifestyle adjustments. Elizabeth Snow joined our East Gate Pharmacy in July of 2021. She brings a unique flair to the workplace with her quick wit and meticulous organizational skills. Liz is our data entry tech who specializes in insurance adjudication and shot processing. Her attention to detail keeps everything running smoothly and she can always find a smart solution when challenges pop up. Liz uses her problem-solving abilities and sweet treats to take great care of all of our patients daily (but the four-legged patients are probably her favorite)! International Overdose Day

August 31st is International Overdose Awareness Day. The CDC estimates that 80,000 people in the U.S. lost their lives to drug overdoses last year. Overdose can affect anyone, and awareness saves lives. Know the signs to spot an overdose: -Slow or no breathing -Unconsciousness -Pale, cold, or blue skin/lips -Gurgling or choking sounds If you see these signs: -Call 911 immediately -Administer naloxone (Narcan) if available -Stay with the person until help arrives We're coming together to reduce stigma, raise awareness, and support those affected. 💜

Did you know? 🤔 The red “Rx” symbol comes from the Latin word recipe, which means “take this.” 💊 Back in medieval times, doctors would write “Rx” at the start of prescriptions to tell pharmacists what ingredients to “take” and prepare. Some also believe the symbol traces back to Jupiter’s symbol (♃), thought to bring good health and protection. In othe words: It's a small symbol with a big history! 🩺
