At Apple Tree Counseling LLC, we regularly work on grief and seeing how difficult those roads are, we can’t help but think of how to infuse creativity and holistic methods into the healing process. In making a shadowbox (a frame with 3D dimension), you could do many things possibly without knowing it including:
1. Taping into the unconscious: art is known for taping into the unconscious mind and being able to bring forward true intentions, fears, and deep seated feelings to the surface
2. Present such feelings that words cannot describe: art is a medium of whole body and mind connection. Because you are tapping into both the conscious mind and unconscious, you could pick colors, themes, certain items, or bring emotions necessary for healings without internalizing/analyzing what they mean!
3. Use a well known method for reprocessing trauma and implicit feelings, completely unintentionally: Bilateral Stimulation is a central part of EMDR therapy and a way to connect both sides of the brain to reprocess stuck, painful memories and feelings. Grief is a minefield. Bilateral stimulation heals and comforts. Many art activities naturally involve a left to right flow of the eyeline and movement of the hands. Healing 😁

We are also happy to announce that our office is now in Lorton Station, just 10 minutes away from Occoquan. We unfortunately had to move locations but this will open up many new opportunities for our staff to help many new clients.
