This lovely patient made my day. 9 years ago I performed a laminectomy procedure on him as a new surgeon at the University of Washington in Seattle. I remember he was one of my first surgical cases.

He remembered me, followed my career, and today flew down to Los Angeles just to see me again for a consult. Stories like this are very humbling and make me quite grateful for having this career.

Highlights from day one at the FOCOS Hospital in Ghana. We had a half day of clinic and a visit to a local orphanage. Grateful for the team that we’ve assembled for this mission trip. Excited for the week of surgery ahead!

Excited to share that our practice is now seeing patients in our San Pedro location! Today was our first day. For years I’ve found this community to be hardworking, kind and respectful. Grateful to finally have this opportunity. Call us at 562-732-4578 for an appointment.

This past week we helped a patient with a very complex spine problem. He had a cervial deformity and a lumbar scoliosis both of which were fixed in the past. Unfortunately, he sustained hardware failure with a broken rod in the middle of this thoracic spine. This can sometimes happen with long complex fusions. We performed a revision utilizing a “multi rod technique” and placed 4 screws into the pelvis which is shown in this image.

This strategy, while technically challenging has great benefit in these tough situations. 4 rods and pelvic screws allow a rigid construct that is very resistant to failure and provides peace of mind for patients. Across the middle thoracic spine where the construct is most vulnerable, we have 6 rods in place. We also place large cages in the front of the spine to provide additional support.

I’ve learned many of these complex techniques after many years of doing revision cases and from my experience doing complex scoliosis cases abroad in Africa. I’m happy to report that the patient is doing well less than two weeks after this complex reconstruction.
