USC Department of Neurosurgery We aim to combine compassionate care with state-of-the-art techniques to provide the finest neurosurgical services to patients.

The Department of Neurological Surgery is composed of 20 eminent, full-time clinician-scientists who are dedicated to patient care, scholarly activities and education of neurosurgical residents and fellows. Many of our faculty members hold national and international leadership roles. We also feature numerous faculty with dual appointments at USC, and a cohort of exceptional staff researchers.

--Our department, established in 1919, was the first organized neurosurgical service west of the Mississippi and featured the first neurosurgical training program on the West Coast, launched in 1927.
--Our department was instrumental in developing the skull-based neurosurgery subspecialty, starting in the 1980s.
--We were the first neurosurgical department to include full-time radiologists on our faculty to deliver neuro-endovascular care, beginning in 1994, and we have continued to make substantial contributions to radiosurgery.
--Four of our faculty members have been named among “America’s Best Doctors.”
--Two of our faculty members serve as editors of prestigious, international journals of neurosurgery.
--The department’s clinical volume, in excess of 3,000 cases, ranks as one of the five largest programs in the United States.

🎉 Congratulations to Dr. Gabriel Zada on his new national leadership role as Editor of Neurosurgical Focus—a major honor reflecting USC’s impact in academic neurosurgery.

🧠 Celebrating discovery: Dr. Frank Attenello has received new support from The Sontag Foundation through FUNDers Together to Solve Glioblastoma (FUND GBM) to advance critical research in glioblastoma—targeting treatment-resistant cancer stem cells that may “hide” during chemotherapy and drive recurrence.

📅 Save the date: The Southern California Brain Tumor Conference is coming soon, hosted by the USC Brain Tumor Center, featuring Dr. Patrick Soon-Shiong as our keynote speaker.

This month, we’re celebrating major milestones across USC Neurosurgery.

Dr. Brian Lee and Dr. Xenos Mason are leading a groundbreaking stem-cell clinical trial for Parkinson disease, giving USC patients early access to this promising therapy.

We’re also honored to announce a new endowed Chair in Neurological Surgery, funded by the Stead Foundation and named in honor of Dr. Steven Giannotta, whose legacy continues to guide our mission.

We proudly celebrated the 5-year anniversary of the USC Brain Tumor Center, highlighting the growth, innovation, and patient impact that define our work.

As we enter this season of gratitude, we thank our clinicians, researchers, trainees, and staff for their dedication and excellence. 🍂🧡

Our department has been on the move — with our incredible faculty and programs featured on national and international stages!

💫 The USC Brain Tumor Center proudly served as a Platinum Sponsor of the American Brain Tumor Association’s 2025 National Conference, where our team helped drive impactful discussions on advancing research and patient care.

💪 We also hosted the USC Spine Symposium, a powerful day of collaboration and innovation in spinal disorder management.

🌍 In August, the International Society of Pituitary Surgeons Conference returned for the first time since 2018, co-directed by Dr. Gabriel Zada, reaffirming USC’s leadership in global neurosurgical education.

🏙️ Looking ahead, the Congress of Neurological Surgeons Annual Meeting comes to Los Angeles, Oct 11–15, led by CNS President and USC alum Dr. Daniel J. Hoh.
