What is the difference between mental performance and mental health resources for athletes?
High-Performance coach Jake Rauchbach explained it very succinctly in his article about these two disciplines and how they intertwine. Check out an excerpt from his article below, or follow the link to Basketball Insiders to read the whole piece.
๐ The Difference Between The Two ๐
โAs the head coach, to have the offense run smoothly, you wouldnโt put a power forward at the point guard spot, nor would you necessarily put your point guard at the power forward spot. Yes, both are basketball players, but no, their skill-sets are generally not the same, nor are they applied as such during the game. There are always exceptions, and in this case, players like LeBron James โ who add value at multiple positions โ is the anomaly. However, this is not the norm.
For the Mental Health Resource and Mental Performance Resource, the same holds true. Although these two professionals play on the same proverbial court, it is not best practice to interchange the two. For instance, putting the Clinical Psychologist or Counselor in the game to improve a playerโs performance is ineffectual because this is not their expertise. Employing the Mental Performance Resource for clinical issues, such as drug addiction, is not best practice and may be inappropriate.โ
