It’s super rude to play things out loud on your phone in enclosed public spaces. It ruins people’s days. Noise canceling headphones don’t cancel out the whispery hell of your tinny speakers. At best, it’s annoying and inconsiderate and at worst it is panic-inducing sensory torture. Save your reel for later or put in earbuds. Make spaces accessible. Don’t be that person.

Being an autistic ADHD nurse is hard. Autistic and healthcare burnout compound each other. Traumatic stress symptoms mirror and exacerbate sensory overload and break down the masks and filters I use to overcome processing challenges. Executive functioning is basically my job. Showing just enough emotion to communicate compassion but not so much that you break a therapeutic relationship (with a patient or a coworker) is exhausting and leaves a wake of grief, anger, frustration roiling behind the end of every hard shift. The way we see things is different, often bigger than momentary concerns; because of this, it can be difficult to express our ideas and vision. Without support, we become frustrated and then disillusioned. Working takes up so many hit points, sometimes we come home with nothing to spare for family, friends or spouses.
Degrading and demeaning comments break us down fast but bu****it does it faster. ’Resiliency Training’ is a joke for us- you mean my masking, compensating, rallying to come in one more day isn’t enough for you? You have now idea just how resilient I am.
