In 2019 my family and I experienced a life-altering tragedy. It was sheer chaos and I spent the better part of a year trying to steady myself and my daughter. One of the best bits of advice I got was, “don’t look into the spin” I still think of that every single day…it’s really helpful during times like this when you can get whiplash from all of the tragic events in our society. I’m not suggesting anyone become numb to, or ignore, what is happening. Apathy is death! But do keep your eye on where you want to go. The chaos is intentional. A strategy to disempower. Don’t let it take your power away. Control what you can and take small steps to help others. (march, feed, listen to, love, write letters, make phone calls, run for office!) When I stopped looking into the spin and put my eye on where I wanted to go, things got much better. Anyway, here is the metaphor. Use it if it helps. 🪄🪄”The phrase “don’t look into the spin” refers to a racing maxim: your car will go where your eyes are focused. In a spin, this means you must avoid looking at the spinning car or the wall, and instead focus on correcting the slide and looking to the path you want to take. This concept applies to life, suggesting that focusing on distractions or tragedy will lead you into trouble, while maintaining focus on your goals will help you move forward safely.”
