SPLENDA!!! SUGAR SUGAR SUGAR

Splenda is the brand name for the chemical compound called sucralose that is 600 times sweeter than sugar.
It’s worth nothing that Splenda is actually 99 percent SUGAR (dextrose and maltodextrin, which are derivatives of high-fructose corn syrup), with 1 percent sucralose added. This is how strong a sweetener sucralose actually is.

What is Sciatica?
Sciatica is an irritation to the sciatica nerve that runs out of the lumbar region of the back.
Most commonly presents as lighting type pain that runs down your leg.
The definition of sciatica is a pain syndrome causing the symptoms to present themselves in many different ways and therefore there are different ways to treat sciatica pain.
Sciatic pain due to irritation or compression can be fixed at the Illinois Back Institute through our Functional Disc Rehydration which relieves the pressure on the sciatic nerve.
What is NOT Sciatica?
Sciatica is not muscle spasms
Sciatica is not knee pain that is only in the knee and does not travel elsewhere
Sciatica is not hip pain after one has fallen and one feels a specific pin point pain on their hip. This is a common misdiagnosis in the older population.
Why is Illinois Back Institute Different?
Nerves do not show up on x-rays so on x-rays the results may appear normal but here at the Illinois Back Institute before therapy begins we always send our patients to receive an MRI to examine the nerve and see why the nerve is irritated
-This can be for a few reason and the most common ones are:
1) A disc pressing onto the nerve causing irritation
2) Bones being out of alignment that presses against the nerve and cause irritation
3) Muscle pinching the nerve
Sciatic pain here is treated at the Illinois Back Institute through the multiple modalities including: medical evaluation from the medical doctors, treatments with the chiropractors, custom exercises sessions with the physical therapist and our target specific equipment which relives the irritated nerve.

Tip of the Day: Raw Milk!
Did you know the best source of calcium is raw milk? If you don’t have raw dairy products readily available then look to fish, green leafy vegetables or bone meal. Sardines and sesame seeds also have generous amounts.
There is usually never a need to supplement with it because of its wide availability from our diets. However, in order to make use of the calcium in your foods, you need to have adequate hydrochloric acid production in the stomach and healthy bile production. Both of these are critical for ensuring you have enough calcium to keep your body strong and healthy.

Nature intends that we obtain nourishment from foods. Nutrient-dense, organically-raised food is what your body wants and needs. But what many people consume falls far short of this, so they‟re often deficient in numerous nutrients. Improving the quality of one‟s diet is essential. For many, supplementing is a good idea. Fifty-three percent of North Americans now take dietary supplements. However, you can‟t make up for a poor diet or unhealthy lifestyle by taking a handful of pills consisting of separate or synthetic chemical nutrients. Biochemistry (the chemistry of living things) doesn‟t work that way. Whole foods contain a combination of innumerable ingredients (some not yet identified) that harmoniously work together. Supplements made of concentrated real whole foods contain nutrients in a synergistic web the way nature made them. The nutrients are never isolated. Instead, they are highly complex structures that combine a huge variety of vitamins, minerals, trace elements, enzymes, coenzymes, amino acids, antioxidants, fatty acids, activators and many other undiscovered factors. This enables the nutrients to do what they are supposed to do in your body.

POTASSIUM!!!
BY: Dr.TOPJIAN
Have you ever found yourself sighing frequently or feeling slightly breathless? What about having dry mouth, decreased perspiration, or feeling uncomfortable in closed rooms? You may just need a little potassium to feel better. This important mineral is needed for digestion, cellular health, and sugar regulation. For babies, it helps with teething and prevention of cavities. It also helps stimulate and wake up tired adrenal glands. Great sources are alfalfa, dulse, molasses, watercress, citrus fruits, figs, and beet greens.

DIGESTION!!
STEPS TO HEALTHY LIVING
Enzymes are the key to digestion, absorption and assimilation of nutrients that Nature intends for our health and vitality.
Good digestion and assimilation of nutrients is painless, quiet. In fact, with proper digestion you should eat a meal and not even be aware that your food is digesting!
With poor digestion one feels distressed and aggravated, sometimes during and most often after the meal. Too many people are taking antacids, laxatives and medications to treat symptoms brought on by years of poor food choices and decreased enzyme production.
Bad digestion has a cumulative effect. Bad digestion leads to conditions of nutritional deficiency which lead to worse digestive function. It is a vicious cycle!
Symptoms of bad Digestion are the body calling out for HELPPPP.
At our Nutritional Wellness includes proper food choices eaten in a particular order to best enhance the function of one’s digestive enzymes. If a condition of indigestion continues after these lifestyle changes have been made that means you need digestive enzymes.

MALTODEXTRIN !!!
READ THE LABELS
BY: Dr. TOPJIAN
How is maltodextrin made?
Maltodextrin is a white powder made from CORN, RICE; POTATO STARCH or WHEAT!!!!.
Even though it comes from plants, it’s highly processed. To make it, first the starches are cooked, and then acids or enzymes such as heat-stable bacterial alpha-amylase are added to break it down further. The resulting white powder is water-soluble and has a neutral taste.
Maltodextrins are closely related to corn syrup solids, with the one difference being their sugar content. Both undergo hydrolysis, a chemical process involving the addition of water to further assist breakdown.
However, after hydrolysis, corn syrup solids are at least 20 percent sugar, while maltodextrin is less than 20 percent sugar.

DR TOPJIAN'S TIP OF THE DAY!!!!
MANGOS!!!!!
Mangos are good for your mood! New research from Japan shows that mangos may alter your chemistry by sending a wave of good feelings over your entire body. Select mangos that are just barely soft to the touch and not mushy. Cutting around the large seed inside the mango can be tricky. And before you know it, you’ll be enjoying the sweet, juicy flesh of this amazing fruit!

CATALYN!!!
BY: Dr. TOPJIAN
One of my favorite multivitamins is called Catalyn. It has an amazing number of very unique yet important ingredients which provide an abundance of precursors that keep your body running smoothly. These are not found in our diets any longer which is why this important food-based supplement is so important for supporting systemic health. Some of the ingredients include carrot root, dried liver powder, dried kidney powder, dried pea vine juice, dried alfalfa and mushrooms. Pretty sure we don’t get many of these in our daily diets

Health Benefits of Eggplant
BY: Dr. TOPJIAN
Eggplant is technically a fruit but considered by us as a vegetable and the most common color for it is purple but little do we know that it has a wide variety of colors and sizes which can be green, black, or red. It's mild flavor and versatility brings comfort to all our dishes and more than that, it is a house for many nutrients which we surely love!
GOOD FOR BONES. People who are at high risk in osteoporosis the benefit that the eggplant can do for bones. High in Calcium, Potassium. Potassium triggers the absorption of calcium to our body which makes it a significant mineral in fortifying bones.

Tip of the Day: Food For Your Heart heart emoticon
Heart health is much more than exercise. Your heart needs food just as much as your belly does. And when it doesn’t get the nutrients it needs, it can become lazy and begin to break down. So how do you feed your heart? The most important nutrients for your ticker are vitamins B, G, C, E and Magnesium. Don’t settle for synthetic copies of these vitamins but instead look to your food to supply them. Foods high in vitamin B and G include spinach, parsley, broccoli, beets asparagus and lentils. Of course, vitamin C can be found in citrus fruits but also in papaya, bell peppers and of course, broccoli! Sunflower seeds, almonds and the superfood, spinach are rich in vitamin E along with pumpkin seeds, spinach (again) and quinoa. Takeaway point: Just eat lots of healthy fruits, vegetables (emphasis here), fruit, nuts, seeds and don’t forget your healthy fats! You’re heart will be healthy in no time!

What happens when you don’t have a gallbladder?
INTRODUCED TO YOU BY: Dr. TOPJIAN
Your liver continues to manufacture bile, but there is no longer a place to store it or concentrate it. Therefore, bile continually slowly trickles into intestines. If you eat a fatty meal, you will not be able to secrete a large enough amount of bile into your intestines, therefore the fat will be poorly digested. This means many people experience diarrhea, bloating, nausea or indigestion.
Not digesting fat well means you will not be able to digest essential fatty acids, including omega 3 and omega 6 fats. It also means you’ll have a hard time absorbing fat soluble vitamins such as vitamins D, E, A and K. These nutrients are vital for good health, and you will probably need to take a supplement.
How to have a healthy liver and good digestion without a gallbladder
First of all, it’s important to realize that you developed a gallbladder problem in the first place because you had an unhealthy liver. If your liver is not healthy, it will make poor quality bile. The bile will be prone to forming sludge and stones. Just whipping the gallbladder out doesn’t solve that problem, and in fact sludge and stones can form within the liver, compromising its function.
Here are some vital tips to follow:
• Keep your intake of dairy products and grains to a minimum or avoid them altogether. Dairy products (milk, cheese, ice-cream, yoghurt) worsen all cases of gallbladder disease, liver disease and they are very difficult to digest. Food intolerance is a common cause of gallbladder problems, and there is research that links gluten intolerance with gallstones. A good reason to keep your intake of grains low is to reduce the risk of developing a fatty liver.
• Take a good quality liver tonic such as Livatone. The herbs St Mary’s thistle, dandelion root and globe artichoke leaves all increase bile production and bile flow. Taurine is an amino acid necessary for bile production. This should help to make you feel more comfortable after a meal, and should reduce the risk of stones forming inside your liver.
• Eat some good fats and avoid the bad fats. Your doctor may have recommended you follow a low fat diet after having your gallbladder removed. This is not necessary and in fact it is harmful. Your body desperately needs good fats and I recommend you include moderate quantities of extra virgin olive oil, avocados, coconut milk and oil, nuts and seeds in your diet.
• Take a good quality digestive enzyme supplement. The natural bile salts in this product will help you digest fats and fat soluble vitamins more thoroughly.
• You may need a vitamin D3 supplement. I MEAN REAL VITAMIN D from WHOLE FOOD SUPPLEMENTATION ONLY. People with a sluggish liver often do not manufacture vitamin D adequately. Therefore, it’s a good idea to get a blood test and take a supplement. ASK YOUR DOCTOR.
• Include some bitter and sour foods in your diet. They should help to improve your digestion and make it easier to tolerate good fats in your diet. Suitable bitter and sour foods include lemons, limes, radicchio lettuce, chicory, endive and dandelion leaves. These leaves are fairly easy to grow at home if you are lucky enough to have your own veggie patch.

VITAMIN D!!!!
Vitamin D is one of the most important nutrients for helping utilize T3 inside the cell. We often do not get enough from the sun so will need to be extra diligent during the winter months to ensure vitamin D intake is sufficient. This fat-soluble vitamin can become too high if you aren’t careful. So, instead of supplementing with a synthetic, try using Cod Liver Oil for a wonderful source of vitamin A and D

Dr. TOPJIAN’S Heart Tip of the Day: Cholesterol Intake!
Is cholesterol intake really responsible for all cardiovascular disease?
Unfortunately, mainstream medicine has convinced the masses that the forbidden egg & other animal fats are the dreaded enemy and will most certainly lead to a stroke or heart attack. But this is simply not true. Elevated cholesterol levels on a blood test are implicated in less than 30% of cardiovascular illnesses. In fact, a large number of studies have shown that the more fat you eat, saturated fat that is, the healthier your arteries! My favorite fats are: organic butter, raw heavy cream, pastured bacon and bacon fat, fatty meats (no lean meat for me!) and coconut oil, milk. So, step out of the box and do me a favor: Drown your broccoli in butter. Your mouth (and your arteries) will thank you for it.

Headaches and You
WRITTEN and INTRODUCED TO YOU BY: Dr. SHAHE TOPJIAN, D.C.
Many people are suffering from headaches that are caused by problems in the spine. Tight muscles in the neck can cause referred pain into the head. Tight neck muscles can put pressure on the blood supply to the head as well. The body has to increase the blood pressure to allow enough blood supply to pass through the tight neck and into the delicate structures inside the head.
That chronic increase in blood pressure will damage the small blood vessels throughout the body. Patients are prescribed anti-hypertensive medications to force the blood pressure back down. These medicines have side effects such as Lightheaded and or dizziness, Headaches, Vomiting and or nauseated feeling, Anxiety, Fluctuation in weight-either up or down, Rash on the skin, Lethargic, fatigue, weak, sleepy and or drowsiness, Constipation, Diarrhea, Racing heart, Pain and or discomfort in the chest, and Flu symptoms.
Besides putting pressure on the blood vessels, tight muscle in the neck can irritate the major parasympathetic nerve of the body. This nerve is called the Vegus nerve and is responsible for the relaxation response. Extensive research has been done on the Relaxation Response and it is known to offer following benefits - Lowers stress hormones, Increases arousal from the drowsy state, Lowers blood pressure, Helps in relieving pain, Increases motivation and productivity, Improves decision making, and Helps in curing sleep disorders.
When the nerve for the relaxation response is compromised the person can become Sympathetic Dominant. Symptoms include inability to relax, mind racing - fretting, inability so sleep well, poor digestion, chronic fatigue, lowered immune system, and increased pain. The heart will beat faster and the blood pressure will increase.
In modern society, the more we can contain the sympathetic reaction and induce the relaxation response the better our health will be.

HEART SUPPORT
BY: Dr. TOPJIAN
February is "NationalHeartMonth" so I thought I’d share two of my favorite heart-healing herbs. Although not technically a heart-restoring herb, Horse Chestnut is one of my favorites because it helps strengthen the veins and supports the return of blood back to the heart, relieving swelling in the legs, ankles, and feet. And the other herb, Hawthorn, will strengthen and support the heart muscle and can increase and improve circulation throughout the entire body! A perfect pair for all-around cardiac support!
