Trauma isn’t just something we think about, it’s something our bodies hold. EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) works by targeting those stuck memories and sensations, helping your nervous system finally release what’s been trapped.

Healing doesn’t have to mean reliving it. EMDR helps you process in a way that’s gentle, embodied, and empowering.

Curious about how EMDR could support your healing? Reach out to connect with a Pasadena therapist trained in trauma-informed care.

“Your stress response tells a story, but it doesn’t have to define your future.”

When you go into survival mode, whether it’s fight, flight, freeze, or fawn, your body is doing what it learned to do to keep you safe. These reactions aren’t flaws. They’re adaptations.

But what once protected you may now be keeping you stuck. Chronic stress can trick your body into thinking it’s always in danger, even in moments of safety or connection.

The good news is that you’re not powerless here. Our therapist Julia Wilson posted a new blog about how learning to notice your body’s cues, understanding your triggers, and building a plan to return to baseline, you begin to write a new story. One with more freedom, more self-trust, and more safety.

Your body can learn that it’s safe again. And you don’t have to do it alone.

Did you know your body often signals anxiety before your mind does? All of us have behaviors that we unconsciously act out when we are worried. For example, if you are concerned about the state of affairs in the world, you might reach for a snack, which results in a distraction from your anxiety. Our unconscious behaviors can actually double our worry. We have the power to use our bodies to alleviate our anxiety instead of adding to it, but the first step is recognizing the signals our body is sending us. Next time you feel uneasy, pause and observe: Is your heart racing? Are your muscles tense? Is your throat tight? Identifying these signs is the first step toward calming your mind.

We’ve been told serotonin is the “happiness hormone,” but it’s not as simple as that. Serotonin is often treated like a drug we can mechanically increase to “make us” feel good.

Imagine trying to force fun into a boring moment with friends—saying ‘Let’s have fun!’ doesn’t work because fun is a byproduct, not a cause. The same goes for serotonin and happiness. We’ve been viewing serotonin as the cause and something we need to forcibly create more of in our lives in order to feel happy.

The problem with this backwards belief is it keeps us from understanding what we actually need to feel better. Instead of chasing serotonin, it’s time to take a more holistic view of mental health that addresses your whole self. Yes — serotonin is present during moments of happiness, but it’s important not to assume it’s the cause of your happiness. People pleasing isn’t about just being nice. It’s often tied to deeply held beliefs like “if I say no, they won’t like me,” or “My worth is based on how much I do for others.” If that sounds familiar, you’re not alone. If you struggle with being a people pleaser, hear this: it is okay to prioritize your needs. Addressing what you want doesn’t make you selfish. Try challenging the fear of rejection and soothing the part of you that feels unsafe setting boundaries or saying no. Therapy is a great place to learn how to master this skill! Jake Maxwell can help you work through fears of rejection, build your self worth, and learn to set boundaries. Click the link in our bio to get started on your journey to choosing yourself.

Do you ever feel like you’re always left guessing about what your husband is feeling? Maybe you even feel like you want to be there for him but he doesn’t know how to let you. It can seem helpless when you feel like you’ve tried everything you can to emotionally connect with him only to be met with him pulling away. This can be a hard and isolating reality to face, and we want to offer some more perspective. It’s important to understand that emotional avoidance often stems from underlying fears – fear of vulnerability, fear of rejection, or fear of being judged. It can also be a learned behavior, especially if someone grew up in an environment where emotions were not openly discussed. Overcoming emotional avoidance is a process that will take time - try to celebrate small wins and progress, and avoid pressuring him to change overnight. Additionally, you can gently suggest therapy as a safe space to process where this emotional avoidance is coming from. Click the link in bio to read more practical tips on how to help your husband overcome emotional avoidance.
