Coping During the Los Angeles Fires: Tools & Compassion
The ongoing fires in Los Angeles are a heavy burden for so many. It’s okay to feel overwhelmed, anxious, or even guilty about trying to maintain some normalcy during this time.
Here are 5 ways to cope and take care of yourself:
1️⃣ Normalize Your Feelings
It’s normal to feel a mix of emotions—fear, sadness, anger, or even numbness. Some might feel guilty for enjoying parts of life while others are struggling. Remember: Taking care of yourself is not selfish.
2️⃣ Prioritize Your Safety
Follow evacuation orders, check air quality regularly (try apps like AirNow or PurpleAir), and stay indoors with an air purifier if possible.
3️⃣ Stay Connected
Reach out to friends, family, or a support group. Talking about your experience can help you process and feel less isolated.
4️⃣ Create Small Comforts
In uncertain times, small routines can ground you. Take a bath, cook a comforting meal, or watch a favorite show to create moments of calm.
5️⃣ Limit Exposure
It’s important to stay informed, but overloading on news or social media can heighten anxiety. Set specific times to check updates and give yourself permission to unplug.
💬 Remember:
It’s okay to laugh, to relax, or to find joy, even now. These moments of normalcy don’t mean you care less—they mean you’re human.
✨ Stay safe, stay kind, and take it one day at a time. ✨
