Therapy for Creatives by Elizabeth Hill, MA, LMFT Musician, actor, dancer, writer, fine artist? Your heightened sensitivity affords you the creativity you possess — this is part of your gift.

Benefit from a unique perspective formed by my experience as a therapist and by pursuing my own creative endeavors. Evolving over the last 13 years, a significant portion of my client-base — and the work we do together — is now devoted to providing therapy for creatives. In part, this is a product of living/working in Los Angeles, but I owe it more to my personal experience in creative fields whic

h gives me a keen understanding of both the inner worlds of artists, as well as the unique challenges that come with pursuing creative endeavors. Whether you’re a musician, actor, writer, painter, sculptor, or aspiring to be so, I will help you access your creativity, your voice, and your vision. Our goal is to hone your sensitivity by addressing what prevents emotional healing: self-limiting beliefs, some form of trauma, depression and anxiety, or self destructive behaviors. You have all you need within you to have the creative life you want — together we will find it. I offer a complimentary 20-minute consultation to determine if we are a good fit.

Most creatives I work with deal with some form of Impostor Syndrome - it's very real!
“The goal is not to never feel like an impostor. The goal for me is to give [people] the tools and the insight and information to talk themselves down faster,” she says. “They can still have an impostor moment, but not an impostor life.”

"Artists were more likely to show both vulnerabilities and resources than non-artists. We recruited artists as they are known for their creativity, but we were not interested in only artistic creativity. We also examined creativity more generally, beyond visual arts, and found that more creative individuals are more likely to be at the same time above average in psychological vulnerabilities and resources."

A new study shows creativity is related to both vulnerabilities and strengths.

"...seemingly irrelevant stimuli can benefit the creative process—but only if you have the emotional intelligence to treat them as potentially helpful, and incorporate them into your thinking. If you are flustered by the prospect of failure, this becomes much more difficult, as such information is perceived as an irritating distraction rather than something you might be able to build upon."

New research finds the ability to recognize and manage feelings is beneficial to the creative process.

Destigmatizing mental health struggles is important!

"I struggled with depression. The struggle was intense ... Low self-esteem might be rooted in childhood feelings of inferiority. It could relate to failing to meet impossibly high standards. And of course there are always the societal issues of racism and sexism," the Grammy winner wrote in a 2018 issue of Essence. "Put it all together and depression is a tenacious and scary condition. Thankfully, I found my way through it." - Janet Jackson

In recent years, many musicians have been doing their part to destigmatize mental health issues by opening up about their own struggles. Here's what they've said.

Some of the same traits that make a person creative are also traits of the highly sensitive person. So does this mean HSPs are natural born creatives?
