Did you know that having a nurturing relationship with your baby and responding to their needs provides a foundation for learning and helps them develop good relationships as they grow? This is why bonding between a parent and their baby is very important for their development. When you’re tired or busy as a parent, it may become difficult to invest a significant amount of time or attention into that special one-on-one time, which is why at FIIT Mommy, we provide many variations and opportunities to bond with your baby, including:
• Playing
• Singing
• Holding
• Interacting
Bonding isn’t assured or easy; it is a process that strengthens over time as parents and babies get to know and learn each other. FIIT Mommy is committed to giving you the time, space, and tools to create and build loving and trusting relationship that will nurture your bond, especially in those first precious months💜

Did you know that May is Maternal Mental Health Month? In many countries, 1 in 5 new mothers will experience some type of perinatal mood and anxiety disorder, most of which will go unnoticed and untreated. Although depression and anxiety can occur at any time throughout a woman’s lifetime, the period around pregnancy and after the birth of a baby can be a particularly high-risk period for our mental health. It is important to know that this is very common, and though it may feel like it, you are not alone! If you or anyone you know is experiencing postpartum depression or anxiety, you have options. Seek help via a therapist, confiding in loved ones, or Postpartum Support International. It is important that mothers take time to prioritize their mental and emotional health for themselves and their babies. And remember, us mommies are all in this together🤍

Bonding with your baby is one of the greatest, most special aspects of becoming a parent. Although it is seemingly something that we assume will come naturally, bonding can also feel challenging to new parents, and can leave us feeling guilty or shameful if we don’t feel that instant connection with our newborns. If you’re struggling to bond with your little one, just know that you’re not alone, and it doesn’t mean you are doing anything wrong. There is no specific timeline or rule book for how or when this should happen. Here are some tips and suggestions on how to work towards a stronger connection with your baby:
💞Breast or bottle feeding.
💞Skin to skin contact.
💞Talk, read and sing to your baby.
💞Make eye contact with your baby.
💞Mimick your baby’s cooing & other vocalizations.
Just keep in mind that although most infants are ready to bond with their parents almost immediately, it may take a little more time for us, and that is okay. Bonding is a process, so just take it one day at a time.

Choosing whether to breastfeed or formula feed their baby is one of the biggest decisions expectant and new mothers will make. There are a lot of factors which can affect this decision, including work, finances, bonding & time management. In fact some mothers may not even be given the choice when facing difficulties with breastfeeding such as low milk production or issues with latching. One thing we’ve found is that the added pressure of feeling like you “should” choose breastfeeding over formula, only adds to the potential stresses and insecurities we face as new mommies. With that said, your choice is just that; YOUR CHOICE. Whatever makes you and your baby happy is the right decision for you both 🤍

The thought of returning back to work after giving birth may seem overwhelming to new moms, and postpartum emotions can make the thought even more distressing. Anxiety over leaving your baby for the first time, lack of sleep, feeling detached from the “old you”, and the complete change in your routine are all factors that can contribute to your apprehension. These feelings are all normal and can be managed. If you are experiencing difficulty porocessing your return to work, whether at home or out in the world, here are some helpful tips that may make the transition a little bit smoother:
• Seek treatment for any postpartum emotional struggles you are facing prior to returning to work.
• Ask for help from friends or family.
• Set a realistic schedule that makes you comfortable and satisfied.
• Try not to let yourself (or anyone else) set unrealistic expectations for your return to work. Take it one step at a time.

Playing and interacting with your baby is a huge part of their development. Playtime is so important that the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends pediatricians write a "prescription" for it. Playing, however, doesn’t always have to include toys. As early as their first month, babies are eager to explore objects and interact with people they see everyday. Anything from singing to your baby, to making silly faces while you change their diaper, to just putting them down on a play-mat and letting them explore on their own; your baby will benefit from all forms of play and interaction. They will also let you know if they need a break! Some common signals of overstimulation include turning their head away, fussing, closing their eyes or arching their back.

Meet our founder, Brittany Thompson. When Brittany gave birth to her first child in 2019, she was not mentally or emotionally prepared for the postpartum issues she would face. At the time, she had only ever heard of a very specific type of Postpartum Depression, where the mother feels detached from her baby. She had no idea it could affect her in the literal opposite way!

“1 month after giving birth to my daughter, I was struggling intensely with a postpartum condition I did not even know existed. Nobody could hold her but me or my husband, I would lie awake at night in fear that she would stop breathing in her sleep, and I obsessed over the idea of her dying some horrific, tragic death, all of which I would picture over and over in my head. When I was finally diagnosed with Postpartum Anxiety, I was relieved to hear that I wasn’t crazy, but also so confused. How could I have not known about this? Why didn’t anyone prepare or educate me? Luckily, my friend all but forced me to sign up for Mommy & Me, and it changed my life.”

At FIIT Mommy, we understand the importance of having support and guidance, especially through those first few months. And we also believe that slowly (and safely) introducing fitness back into your life is imperative for your mental and emotional health.

“Being a first-time mother, I know how important it is to surround yourself with a support system, such as Mommy & Me. And being a fitness instructor, I know how necessary it is to take care of our bodies, especially after an experience as transformative as pregnancy and childbirth. At FIIT Mommy, you’ll get both, all under 1 roof!”
