How was your body controlled at a young age? What somatic instincts were you conditioned to ignore? How was your body treated by the people responsible for caring for younger you? How did you receive love physically? And how did you receive something else that masqueraded as love?

This isn't without acknowledging external restraints and wounds, for we do have to identify and confront where we learned about our badness, our lack of worth, and whatever ideas of ourselves were inherited without our conscious awareness. But it is inherited, which means it's within us now, and that's where the work is.

Before I went to therapy the first time, I was in a major depressive episode and thought:
-- I don't deserve help
-- I'm suffering because I suck at life, no one can help me with that
-- Friends come to me for help, why can't I help myself?
-- I shouldn't take up a spot that someone who actually needs therapy could have
-- A therapist is only going to shame me for every dumb decision I've ever made. I don't need that.
-- They're going to change me; take away every part of me that I love because some of those parts are also what make me hurt.
-- I should just suck it up and move on.

None of those things -- absolutely zero -- were true.

A good therapist, like my first therapist, will help you find a way to awaken who you are, not destroy it. And if they shame you -- like my second therapist who rolled her eyes at me twice and talked more about herself than I did -- you get the hell out of there and find someone who's actually safe to talk to. Don't let a bad therapy experience take you out of the hunt for someone who can help you.

This month I played with the concept of ghosts that haunt us from within. This correlates to my own inner world as much as it does to the work I do with clients in therapy. Here are 4 episodes of a little something I call Therapy Ghost Stories.

"I'm inclined to think that we're all ghosts... It's not only the things that we've inherited from our fathers and mothers that live on in us, but all sorts of old dead ideas and old dead beliefs, and things of that sort. They're not actually alive in us, but they're rooted there all the same, and we can't rid ourselves of them..." -Henrik Ibsen

I had fun connecting to my inner ghosts. From shame, to addiction, to unrealized purpose, and the immortal inner child, it was empowering to imagine sometimes-disruptive parts of me in this vivid, creative, and loving (albeit frightfully) kind of way; with personalities, with agendas, with their own kind of protective-love-gone-off-the-rails.

A silly but meaningful way to foster a deeper connection with what makes me me, while adding some light to the shadowy corners.

An excerpt from my reflection journal as I was processing my 30-something ADHD diagnosis. More essays and journal entries are included in the upcoming Archetypal ADHD program.

To my fellow spacially-impaired folks, I see you. I can't tell exactly how far away you are or if I'm about to walk into you but I do see you.

Inner work is inherently selfish. But when we make selfishness entirely a bad thing, we overlook the fact that human beings have innate emotional needs and, spoiler alert, we're historically bad at meeting each others' and our own. White-knuckling through emotional needs in order to work, acquiesce, or remain loyal to people who hurt you can actually make us more selfish in our relationships. Ignoring an entire, critical part of you is not the way to community. The key is to do your inner work and then also see how that makes you better out in the world, with the people you love, and the people you don't even know but can empathize with in a deeper way.
