I used to be so focused on looking “in shape” now all I want is to feel “in shape.”

Here’s what I’m doing to achieve that as an elderly person:

1. Not starving myself and skipping meals thinking that’s going to give me the body that I want. Most often, eating more will give you better results, not less.
2. Low impact cardio. I used to spend so much time on the elliptical (lol) or hopping from one machine to another. These days I prioritize getting my steps in, yes just walking, it’s super underrated.

3. Pushing myself and following a program. I used to just purely freestyle in the gym. Zero plan and too much variety and you’re literally just wasting your time. I lift heavier now than I ever did in my 20s and the results show.

4. Resting. I used to work out 5-6 days a week, barely letting my body have time to recover. Changing my workout routine to 4 to 5 days a week is a much more sustainable and beneficial workout split to allow your body time to hit those heavy numbers again.

5. Eliminating comparison and the idea of achieving perfection. Realize that it’s you against you. Embrace your own body and recognize it as strong and capable.

These are the tools and mentality that I will be keeping to continue to embrace the way my body looks and be confident in its strength and capability throughout the next 10 years of my life.

If you’re in your 30s or 40s and want to skip the trial-and-error phase and get guidance from someone who’s been in this game nearly 20 years…

Where do you find your peace?

For as long as I can remember, the gym has been my therapy. The place where I would leave everything behind. The place where I would feel in control. The place that I would find sanctuary in my thoughts. Throughout the year, and throughout life, people have come and gone. The gym, as corny as it sounds, has always been there for me. Good day or bad, when I left work, that’s where I would go and leave any possible negative space, rather than bring it home, it never judged me. It just asked me to show up.

I’m not saying the gym fixes everything—but it gave me an outlet. A place to breathe, to move, to feel stronger when my mind felt heavy. Sometimes peace isn’t silence or stillness. Sometimes it’s sweat, routine, and choosing yourself for one hour.

Wherever you find your peace—movement, music, nature, prayer, talking to someone—protect it. Prioritize it. You deserve it.

Where do you go to reset? 💭💪
