SEND Lab at USC

SEND Lab at USC The Social and Emotional Neurodevelopment (SEND) lab is a research lab within the Mrs. T.H. Chan Div All of these are major determinants of quality of life.

Under the direction of Dr. Barbara Thompson, the long-term goal of our research program is to understand the development and functional consequences of disrupted affective processing in young children. The program is unique, as we utilize model systems and clinical studies in an integrated fashion, ultimately to discover new approaches to intervention in children with special needs. Affective processing is known to influence attention, motivation, and emotional regulation, all of which are essential for healthy brain and child development. Yet, there is a major knowledge gap in understanding affective processing in young children. This gap is even more pronounced for young children with neurodevelopmental disorders and those characterized by language impairments. Adding to this complexity is the fact that affective processing is driven by internal states that directly impact, and probably even drive, specific behavioral output of children. Though challenging to assess, skill-sets in domains influenced by affective processing are critical for establishing capacity in developing executive function, which directly influences adaptive capacities, resilience, problem-solving, and academic and practical skill building. To better understand the neurobiological processes that underlie affective processing, utilization of animal models becomes critical for the comprehensive analysis of molecular, cellular, and circuit components supporting affective behavior.

The SEND Lab's resident Ph.D. student, Cristin Holland, will be presenting (twice!) this year at the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) Annual Conference in Salt Lake City, UT (April 19-22)!

Cristin will be presenting data from the SEND Lab during two separate sessions:

1) Relationships between Therapist and Client Actions during Sensory Integration Therapy for Young Children with Autism (Friday, April 20 from 9-11am)
2) Mechanisms of Co-Constructing Play Between Preschool Age Children and Novel Adults (Friday, April 20 from 12:30-2:30)

If you're planning on heading to the AOTA conference or will be in the Salt Lake City area this Friday, come say "hi" and learn a bit more about our research.

For Information about the AOTA Conference, you can visit the AOTA website: https://www.aota.org/Conference-Events/annual-conference.aspx

Interested in learning more about the SEND Lab at USC? If you happen to be in Washington DC next weekend, you’ll have two different opportunities to see some of our research at the annual Society for Neuroscience Meeting. Our doctoral student, Cristin Holland, will be presenting data on sensory integration therapy in children with autism on Saturday, 11/11 between 1-4p. Dr. Thompson will be presenting data on social motivation heterogeneity in young children with and without autism on Sunday 11/12 from 8a-12p. We hope to see you there!

The SEND Lab's own Dr. Thompson will be presenting during the Neuroscience Seminar & Networking Event "Translational approaches to the study of Autism Spectrum Disorders: methodological and technical trends, innovations, and challenges" On November 10th, 2017 in the City Tap House in Washington, DC. This event takes place right before the Society for Neuroscience kicks off!

Dr. Thompson will be speaking on "Detailed characterization of social and emotional behaviors in young children". Event details can be found here: http://www.noldus.com/event/neuroscience-seminar-networking-event.
