Nurturing Touch Newsletter: Includes Covid 19 update and Teaching Announcement:
Hello and Beauty Partners:

We are living in different and exciting times now. It's a time of positivity, creativity, introspection, perseverance and forward thinking. Businesses are starting to reopen and survival techniques are crucial. Mandatory Covid Policies are in place ( listed above ) and Nurturing Touch Skincare (me) and clients will continue to abide by Sanitation and Aseptic techniques as required by the State and anticipate re-opening possibly July 4th.

In the meantime, do a safety check of your skin, don't just look at your skin, feel it. Running your hands over your skin may be even more important. Look for rough spots that have a sandpaper feel and don't go away, or that go away and come back. When you reach your 60's, precancerous growths appear with increasing frequency. Don't forget your scalp and nails, any strange discolorations can reveal possible health issues.

Great News:
Starting June 1, 2020, I will be participating in online oncology skincare teaching with Tower Cancer Center and I can't wait to teach my first class. I've gotten so many questions ,especially regarding discoloration that appeared after starting to wear masks. So I thought it would be so cool to start off with "Pandemic Skin", how to repair skin changes, and the do's and don'ts of mask wearing. Seemed to be so appropriate during these times. Please sign up when the calendar comes out as there are only 10 slots available and we have the opportunity to increase class size as demand requires. Looking forward to seeing you on zoom, let's re-create the soundtrack for your skincare regimen.

Stay safe, enjoy your holiday, wear sunscreen, wear your mask, wash your hands, journal, focus, pray, meditate. We are going to make it through this and be even better.

Peace, healing and hydration

Coronavirus Update - Recipe for Hydration:
As you know, I have suspended all skincare treatments until further notice. I have product in stock if you need to replenish during the crisis. In the meantime, I want you to have options in keeping your skin hydrated which is of critical importance. So here is one of my favorite hydrating mask that you can do from you kitchen until we meet again!

Hydrate and Brighten Your Skin:
Prep: 5 minutes
Items: Banana, Raw honey and Sour cream
Mask Application/relaxation: 15 minutes
Total: 20 minutes

Recipe: Hydrate and Brighten:
Take 1/2 banana ( mash it ) add 2 tablespoons of Raw honey and 1 tablespoon of Sour Cream. Now mix it all together and apply it to your entire face and neck area. Lay back and relax for about 15 minutes, ( we should have a lot more time now ), rinse it off with warm water and pat dry. Now look in the mirror and revel in your beauty.
It's not quite over, apply 2-3 drops of Serum and then Moisturizer. My favorites are Soothe Essence Serum and Saffron Meristem Moisturizer by Hale and Hush
and, if you must go outside during the day, apply your sunscreen.

Take care of yourselves, until me meet again,

The Benefits of Tumeric:
Turmeric (Curcuma longa) is a culinary spice, a major ingredient in Indian curries, and the source of American mustard’s bright yellow color. Used as both medicine and food for centuries, accumulating evidence suggests that this relative of ginger is a promising preventive agent for a wide range of diseases, probably due largely to its anti-inflammatory properties. Curcumin is the chief active component of turmeric and is usually taken as a supplement.

Research indicates that:
1. Curcumin seems to delay liver damage in some instances that can eventually lead to cirrhosis.
2. Turmeric reduces levels of heterocyclic amines – carcinogenic compounds that are formed when meats are barbecued, boiled, or fried – by up to 40 percent.
3. Curcumin inhibits the growth of skin cancer (melanoma) and also slows the spread of breast cancer into the lungs.
4. Turmeric that is part of daily curries eaten in India may help explain the low rate of Alzheimer’s disease in that country. Among people aged 70 to 79, the rate is less than one-quarter that of the United States!

Hello Health and Beauty Partners,
As we near the end of the month as well as the end of year, let's remember to take a moment to salute our Breast Cancer Warriors. Although October has been designated as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, this is one thing that should lead the forefront every month as lives are being saved daily. Equally so, lives are not being saved daily and it's our job as a community for each one to teach one. Let's educate each other and make sure we take advantage of the resources available for health care exams. Women - start with your mammogram. There are mobile units located through-out Los Angeles that will provide your exam at no cost if necessary.

My gift to all Warriors/Survivors - now through the end of the year - Oncology Skincare treatments are $65.00. As a reminder, oncology facials are beneficial for: 1) Reducing swelling bruising which increases healing time 2) Strengthens immune system by incorporating lymphatic drainage techniques 3) Applications of hydrating topical products necessary to support healing and maintain well balanced skin and, last but not least, 4) You look and feel better from the inside out.

FYI: Makeup used for these type of events tend to be very heavy and oily. You must cleanse before and after application, use your serum and moisturizer before applying. Do NOT go to bed with make-up on.

See you all soon. Peace, healing and hydration

Let's talk about Melasma:
Melasma is probably one of the world's most annoying form of hyperpigmentation. I receive lots of questions about Melasma and wanted to share a little information from my research and experience on this topic:

What it is:
Dark, shadowy patches that typically surface on your cheeks, forehead nose, chin and above your upper lip. More than 90 percent of sufferers are women ( blame your hormones - that's what I did at first too ), and it can appear on anyone. But if you have darker skin or a blood relative with melisma, you're more susceptible.

Why It Happens:
UV exposure and fluctuating hormones are two main causes. Both stimulate your melanocyctes ( the cells that make pigment ) to overproduce, so skimping on SPF, taking hormonal birth control or being pregnant can put you at risk. Inflammation can also cause melasma and is triggered by plenty culprits, including blue light from a phone, heat ( hot yoga yikes ), and using aggressive skin care.

When and How to Treat It:
Winter is the prime time for getting a jump start on fading your melasma. UVB rays are less intense and people are generally spending less time outdoors - two important factors for clearing hyperpigmentation. A combination of gentle exfoliation, brightening serum and daily SPF is the best way to score an even skin tone in a minimum amount of time.

So your game plan is as follows:

Gentle Exfoliation - to slough away discoloration and reveal a glowier complexion.

Brightening Serum - special ingredients such as Vitamin C or arbutin to help inhibit pigment production to both fade melisma and help prevent it from forming.

Sunscreen - Daily even in the shade. SPF30 minimum with at least 10 percent zinc oxide ( the mineral blocker creates an actual shield on the skin so UV rays can't pe*****te) and I also advise wearing a hat if out in the sun consistently especially between the hours of 11:00 to 3:00..

If you would like to discuss any product recommendations or if you have any questions regarding this topic or other skin related questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to me. I'm here to help you transform your skin.

Peace, healing and hydration,

What does your face say about your health?
Cracked Lips:
Everyone gets dry or cracked lips from time to time, especially in winter. Balms can help protect them and keep them moist. But sometimes, dry lips are a sign of a health issue, like dehydration -- when your body doesn’t have enough water. They can also be an allergic reaction or response to a drug, such as steroids.

Habits that are bad for your skin:
You want to treat your skin right so it looks great. But some of the daily routines you may not think about can add up to damage over time. Keep your complexion on track and know which habits to change.

1. You don’t wash your face before bed.

The urge to skip the sink is completely understandable, especially after a long day. But just because you can’t see grime on your face doesn’t mean it’s not there -- and over time, your complexion will pay the price. “Dirt, oil, and pollution build up and lead to both inflammation and breakouts,” says Joshua Zeichner, MD, a dermatologist at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City.

Use a gentle cleanser with moisturizers like glycerin or botanical oils to keep your complexion hydrated. And if you can’t get to the sink or just don’t want to, a few passes with a facial wipe will work in a pinch.

2. You smoke.

Ni****ne reduces blood flow to your skin, which means it doesn’t get enough oxygen and nutrients. And the chemicals in to***co damage the collagen and elastin proteins that give your skin structure, says dermatologist Yoon-Soo Cindy Bae, MD, of the Laser and Skin Surgery Center of New York. “A smoker’s skin is thin, dull, more wrinkled, and less able to heal,” she says.

3. You skimp on sunscreen -- or just skip it.

Sunshine feels good on your skin, but it also has ultraviolet (UV) rays that are damaging. “UV light leads to both premature aging and skin cancers,” Zeichner says.
And it’s not just beach days when you need protection. The sun can damage your skin even when it’s cold or cloudy outside.

4. You eat lots of sugar and not many fruits and vegetables.

Some studies have found that diets heavy on sugar can speed up the aging process. That goes for sweet treats like lollipops and ice cream as well as starches in refined carbs like white bread and pasta. A skin-friendly diet should focus on vegetables, fruits, and whole grains.
