This article examines critical concerns surrounding current wellness systems and anti-gang legislation within law enforcement agencies. It highlights the predominantly reactive approach to officer wellness, emphasizing the need for proactive mental health interventions embedded into daily operations to prevent psychological harm. Additionally, the article critiques California Penal Code Sections 13670-13675, arguing that broadly labeling officer subgroups as "gangs" unfairly penalizes the supportive relationships vital for officers coping with cumulative occupational trauma. It also stresses that departments with large officer populations and limited clinical resources are inadequately equipped to meet these compounded psychological demands.

The connections that officers build with their colleagues are often based on shared experiences, such as officer-involved shootings and critical incidents, as well as trust and camaraderie.

Officers spend thousands of hours outside their homes, frequently facing public scrutiny; thus, some may rely on their colleagues for understanding and emotional support. A solidarity that helps keep them feeling like th...

Many police officers experience disrupted sleep due to shift work and stress. Exercise helps improve sleep quality. Regular exercise can help improve sleep, mood, cognitive function, decision-making, and focus, all key to officer survival.

Here’s a list of ways to start building exercise habits:

1. Set clear goals for what you want to achieve.

2. Select the activities you enjoy that will likely keep you engaged. If you enjoy them, you are more likely to do them.

3. Start with small and manageable activities, low intensity.

4. Find a friend to do it with.

5. Make it doable and convenient.

6. Reward yourself when you achieve your goal.

Exercise is a powerful stress reliever.
