My sickest patients often have this question – Do I treat their illness? They need to know that I can help before taking the leap of investing money, time, and that even-more-precious resource — HOPE! — into another strategy. Often their diagnosis, the thing they are asking me if I treat, was hard won, after months or years of insisting to their doctors that something is not right and doing all the follow up appointments within all the various departments of medicine to prove it.

There’s a new blogpost up with some real-life examples from clinic explaining how Eastern medicine approaches Western disease names. (Really, just another excuse to use my daughter’s sharpie drawing on papertowel of an acupuncture treatment.)

Link to website and blogposts are in my bio, and I’ll put up a direct link in stories.

No info in this post about what acumoxa & herbs can do for you, just a Mom going googoo gaga over seeing her kid grow up in the family biz. She started in the doll treatment department and most recently moved over to marketing and graphic design.

Is it our collective imagination or is everyone getting sick and staying that way?
You’re not making it up, something has changed, and it starts with the letter C. If you’re the type that likes to read more about COVID-19 as a cause of immune dysfunction, here you go: https://www.annclearyacupuncture.com/blog/feeling-like-you-are-always-sick If you just want to feel better, come in for acupuncture and herbs.

I was just in Berkeley at  , studying  with  .  It was so cool to see him write precise and direct formulas for difficult illnesses.  This guy has been studying and practicing for years and he is so generous with what he has learned thus far.  This medicine has been helping people for millennia and it is all thanks to this kind of individual effort that is then shared.

So many things happened.

If you are taking herbs from me now I probably thought about you and how to improve your formula.

I shrunk my green sweater in the Airbnb washer.

I hung out with fun and funny fellow practitioners in our shared house and....

We talked about perimenopause.  If you think the amount of content on social media around perimenopause is overboard, we probably hang out in similar corners of the internet, and I agree.  But then I had to go and add to the noise by writing a blogpost, because me and my colleagues think the current narrative is missing something important — the distinction between a physiological and pathological transition to menopause.

In terms of assessing the on-going public health crisis, the best resource I have come across is this webinar by the Coalition for Clean Air: “The Fires: Air Quality, Public Health and What to Do Next”:

It’s 2.5 hours long with a public Q&A at the end. You can find it easily with on YouTube but I will link to it in my stories.

My friend and colleague Alex Bruehl of did a great synopsis of the information on her substack The Cove Report.

I’ve been in touch with and seen some of you and have been thinking of all of you. I haven’t had the bandwidth to sit down and write or else I would have told you sooner that I have free slots on the schedule for anyone impacted by the fires. “Impacted by the fires” is self-defined, there is no criteria to meet.

I can say that for me personally, I have been walking around in a daze with a tight jaw and back and swollen throat, despite having a home that is still standing outside of the burn zone. Witnessing so many of my loved ones —friends, family, patients — lose homes to the fire or to the toxic ash has been heavy. Not knowing how to accurately assess the safety of the air where we live and how to keep our child safe has been heavy. Knowing that we are on the precipice of more frequent and more severe events like this is heavy. The biggest balm has been to be able to do something tangible to help and to be in community, which includes all of you.

This offering is for existing and new patients, so please share the word. I know many of the most affected people are still triaging…this will be on-going and I will put out periodic reminders.

New book in the clinic waiting room library, by Panquetzani about her ancestral Mexican medicine specifically around postpartum. It’s full of body work for you and your new child, warming food recipes and herbal medicine that you can practice at home. She also teaches classes for BIPOC healers or healers-to-be.

The first time I made pears poached in a dash of red wine and cinnamon (recipe to follow), My 5 year old saw me pouring the cooked liquid over the cooked fruit and asked for a glass of it to drink. She took a sip and exclaimed, “I took a drink and it went straight to my heart!” and put her hands over her heart. Red wine is moving to the blood and cinnamon is a key herb for the heart (and blood). I love stewed apples and pears, and lately I’ve been making this with both fruits. It is nourishing and warming to the digestive system, perfect for this time of year. The apples and pears also help moisten the lungs — important in our dry climate.

There’s a recipe up on the blog, link in bio.

Nothing is sweeter than a day spent at home with a sick kid. Here’s a flash back to the last time she was sick and requested fire cupping. She asked for the ones on her neck, and sighed with relief. Cupping helps to release all the muscles around the lungs and throat that like to tighten with illness, and make it easier for the body to direct its own healing abilities to where they need to go.

Are you using spironolactone for acne? Do you have chronic neck, shoulder, or back pain?

Guess what, they’re related! I see this all the time in my practice. Spironolactone treats the acne but moves you away from overall health. East Asian medicine can be used instead. Not only will it treat your acne, it will soothe the inflammation in your body that causes the acne, and prevent future illnesses along the way.

Drying out your body with a drug that causes frequent urination does exactly the opposite, and can lead to mild or serious future illnesses.

Pictured here is a photograph by Annie Blatt of jin yin hua, or honeysuckle. We often use the dried flower to treat acne, along with my childhood favorite and harbinger of spring — forsythia.

If this post is describing you, I would LOVE to help you return to full health…the kind that does not require drying medication or forever herbal treatments. Link in bio for the full blogpost.

True story, I love to treat uterine bleeding.

It checks all the boxes of being a debilitating illness with limited treatment strategies in allopathic medicine, and so is super satisfying to correct.

The crowning achievement of yin and yang mixing in our bodies is to make BLOOD, a precious substance that moves through our body spreading life the way sap spreads through a tree.

Does this apply to you or someone you know? Check out the blog post in my link in bio.
