What You Need to Know

Updated (bivalent) boosters became available on:

September 2, 2022, for people 12 years of age and older

October 12, 2022, for people aged 5–11

CDC recommends everyone stay up to date with COVID-19 vaccines for their age group:

Children and teens ages 6 months–17 years

Adults ages 18 years and older

Getting a COVID-19 vaccine after you recover from COVID-19 infection provides added protection against COVID-19.

If you recently had COVID-19, you may consider delaying your next vaccine dose (primary dose or booster) by 3 months from when your symptoms started or, if you had no symptoms, when you first received a positive test.

People who are moderately or severely immunocompromised have different recommendations for COVID-19 vaccines.

COVID-19 vaccine and booster recommendations may be updated as CDC continues to monitor the latest COVID-19 data.

Updated Boosters Are Recommended for Some People

CDC recommends that people ages 5 years and older receive one updated (bivalent) booster if it has been at least 2 months since their last COVID-19 vaccine dose, whether that was:

Their final primary series dose, or

An original (monovalent) booster

People who have gotten more than one original (monovalent) booster are also recommended to get an updated (bivalent) booster.

ACTOR CHADWICK BOSEMAN FACED SEVERAL RISK FACTORS FOR COLON CANCER BEFORE DIAGNOSIS

Medically reviewed by: Gary H. Hoffman, MD

Chadwick Boseman, famed actor best known for portraying the title role in Marvel’s “Black Panther” and baseball legend Jackie Robinson in “42,” died after a four-year battle with colon cancer last week. He was 43.

Boseman’s passing came as a shock to fans because of his youth and vibrance–and not only because he kept his fight private. Boseman was not yet 40 years old when he received a stage 3 colon cancer diagnosis in 2016, a cancer that the public generally believes affects older adults. However, he had several common risk factors for the condition, and this highlights the importance of getting regular screenings.

Colorectal Cancer Is Increasing in Younger People

We are seeing more cases of colorectal cancer in young adults today than ever before. There is no doubt that the incidence of colon cancer is increasing in those in their 20s, 30s, and 40s. In fact, according to the Colon Cancer Coalition, about one out of every five cases of colorectal cancer occur in adults between age 20 and 54.

At the same time, those under age 55 are almost 60 percent more likely to receive a late-stage diagnosis than older Americans. For this reason, the American Cancer Society now recommends the age for a first colonoscopy for those with average risk factors begin at 45-years-old. This type of screening was previously recommended to begin at age 50.

There Are Racial Disparities in Colon Cancer

Boseman was also at an increased risk of diagnosis and death because of his race. Black Americans face racial inequities when it comes to both colon cancer screenings and colorectal cancer fatalities.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Black Americans have the highest rate of both diagnoses and deaths of all groups in the United States. In fact, while 64.2 percent of white Americans survive for five years following diagnosis, only 58.1 percent of Black Americans survive .www.lacolon.com

isten to your body. You are worth it, to give you a PEACE of MIND~Screen for you and your loved ones.

If you're s*xually active, especially with multiple partners, you may have questions about the risk of getting a s*xually transmitted disease (STD) and when to get tested.

Getting tested is important. That's because you can have a STD without knowing it. In many cases, there aren't any symptoms. In fact, that's why many experts prefer the term s*xually transmitted infections (STIs), because you can have an infection without disease symptoms.

But what types of STI testing do you need? And how often should you be screened? The answers depend on your age, your s*xual behaviors and other risk factors.

Don't assume that you're receiving STI testing every time you have a pelvic exam or Pap test. If you think that you need STI testing, talk to your health care provider. Tell your provider about your concerns and what tests you would like or need.

Testing for specific STIs
These guidelines for specific STIs can help you decide if STI testing is right for you.

Chlamydia and gonorrhea
National guidelines recommend yearly screening for:

Sexually active women under age 25
Women older than 25 and at increased risk of STIs — such as having s*x with a new partner or multiple partners
Men who have s*x with men
People with HIV
Transgender women who have s*x with men
People who have been forced to have in*******se or engage in s*xual activity against their will
Health care providers screen people for chlamydia and gonorrhea using a urine test or swab. Swabs are taken inside the p***s in men or from the cervix in women. The sample is then studied in a lab. Screening is important, because if you don't have symptoms, you may not know that you're infected.

What is a pregnancy test, and how does it work?
Pregnancy tests check your p*e or blood for a hormone called human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG). Your body makes this hormone after a fertilized egg attaches to the wall of your uterus.

This usually happens about 6 days after fertilization. Levels of hCG rise quickly, doubling every 2 to 3 days.

What types of pregnancy tests are available?
Two main types of pregnancy tests are blood tests and urine tests.

Blood tests

You get these at your doctor's office, but they’re not used as often as urine tests. These tests can detect pregnancy earlier than a home pregnancy test, about 6 to 8 days after ovulation. It takes longer to get the results than with a home pregnancy test.

The two types of blood pregnancy tests are:

A qualitative hCG test simply checks for hCG. It gives a "yes" or "no" answer to the question, "Are you pregnant?" Doctors often order these tests to confirm pregnancy as early as 10 days after conception. Some can detect hCG much earlier.

A quantitative hCG test (beta hCG) measures the exact amount of hCG in your blood. It can find even very low levels of hCG. These tests may help track problems during pregnancy. Your doctor may use them along with other tests to rule out an ectopic pregnancy, when the fertilized egg implants outside your uterus, or after a miscarriage, when hCG levels fall quickly.

“My name is Eric Brown, MD and one of the emergency medicine physicians at Ladera Urgent Care in Los Angeles, Ladera Heights , CA. I was raised in the San Gabriel Valley area (Altadena) and graduated from the UCLA Medical School. I received my training in Emergency Medicine at Martin Luther King Hospital (level 1 trauma center). I have practiced Emergency Medicine in various hospital settings for the past 15 years. In 2007 I wanted to explore options outside of traditional western medicine that I could offer patients and began a fellowship in Integrative Medicine. After completing this fellowship in 2009 I felt I was able to offer patients more valuable information and it made me a better clinician.

What I learned is each of these areas contribute to one's overall health: the importance of diet, the importance of exercise, the importance of mental, and spiritual health. In 2014 I began to explore how I could combine my passion for Emergency medicine training with my interest in Integrative Medicine. I soon realized that the Urgent Care setting was a natural fit that could combine these 2 areas of interest."

We pride ourselves in providing excellent and efficient service. We will also discuss other options outside of traditional western medicine to help with your medical needs. Whether it is discussing the benefits of good nutrition, meditation, or starting yoga practice. Our staff will consider you as an entire person and not just the specific complaint that has you seeking treatment. Our staff wants to make your experience at LUC unlike any other you have received in an acute medical setting like the Emergency Department or other Urgent Care facilities.
