Meet Sandra Varela, a Medical Intake Specialist at Zócalo Health from Hollister, CA.

“Why am I proud to work at Zócalo Health? First, it’s the love for our community. And second, it’s the pride in representing our roots and traditions as Mexicanos and Hispanos—Orgullo Mexicano, nuestras tradiciones, y the joy of familia gatherings.” 💙✨

At Zócalo Health, our team’s heritage and culture inspire the care we deliver every day. Thank you, Sandra, for all you do for our community! 🙏💐

As we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, we will be highlighting our amazing team and why their work means so much to them and our community.

Meet Rosa Parag. In her words:
"As we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, I can’t help but reflect on where my passion for serving my community began.

Growing up as the second oldest of six, I became my parents’ “assistant” in navigating not just the healthcare system, but also the educational and other complex systems that weren’t designed with families like mine in mind. From translating and interpreting, to scheduling appointments and completing forms—I learned early on the importance of advocacy. And to this day, I still proudly support my parents in these ways.

My heart for helping others also comes from my maternal grandmother, whose kindness and dedication to the less fortunate showed me that true strength is found in service.

Now, as a mom of three, I strive to pass on those same values, guiding my children to understand the importance of compassion and helping those without the same privileges.

That’s why I’m so proud to work at Zócalo Health as the Community Engagement Manager. In this role, I get to grow my passion for helping our communities by meeting people where they are—bringing our services into spaces where they feel safe, supported, and truly seen.

For me, this is more than a career, it’s a calling. It’s about carrying on my family’s legacy, honoring our heritage, and building healthier, more equitable futures for the generations to come. "

Today begins Hispanic Heritage Month — a time to honor the strength, culture, and contributions of Latino communities across the United States.

This year, the meaning of this month feels even more urgent. Across the country, many Latino families are facing uncertainty and fear about their livelihoods. Yet, despite these challenges, our communities continue to show resilience, pride, and an unwavering commitment to building a better future.

At Zócalo Health, we believe Hispanic Heritage Month is more than a celebration. It is a call to action. It is a reminder that our stories, our voices, and our health matter. Together, we will keep pushing for access, equity, and dignity in healthcare and beyond.

To our community: We see you. We stand with you. And we celebrate you.

💈✂️ 65 Fresh Cuts. Countless Smiles.*✂️💈

Last week in Visalia CA, Zócalo Health brought families together for a Free Haircutting Event—and served 65 children with fresh cuts, vouchers, and lots of love for the upcoming school year. 💙

This was more than a haircut—it was a celebration of community, care, and connection.

Big thank you to our amazing partners who made it possible:
