This is a 6 y/o girl who swallowed a coin. Children swallowing foreign objects are very common - typically between the ages of 6 months and 3 years. Fortunately, most objects that reach the GI tract pass spontaneously without the need for endoscopic removal. Clinical management therefore focuses on identifying the cases at risks for complications. Warning signs:
⭕️ object is sharp, long, and in the esophagus or stomach
⭕️ object is high-powered magnet, or a disk battery
⭕️ patient has signs of airway compromise
⭕️ patient cannot swallow secretions (signs of esophageal obstruction)
⭕️ fever, vomiting, abdominal pain, retrosternal chest pain, etc.
In this case, x-ray shows a round foreign object (a coin) in LUQ. Since she was asymptomatic and able to eat a popsicle, she was discharged home with monitoring instructions for mom!

We had a patient come in this morning for Conjunctivitis, also known as 👀The conjunctiva is the clear thin tissue that lies over the white part of your eye and lines the inside of your eyelid...

There can be several causes for pink eye, including bacteria, viruses, allergic reactions, fungi, and can sometimes result from a STD such as chlaymidia!

Our patient had extreme swelling and redness of the eye and was experiencing blurred vision. Our staff performed an eye culture with a swab, which tested positive for bacteria and was prescribed antibiotics.

Remember pink eye is highly contagious and requires extreme cleanliness during healing! Change pillow cases, wash eyes and hands frequently, especially before eating.

This patient came to for immediate diagnosis and treatment of a poison ivy rash from a camping trip 🌿
——
treatments are usually limited to self-care methods, and the rash typically goes away on its own in 2-3 weeks
——
If the rash is widespread or results in a large number of blisters, we may prescribe an oral corticosteroid, such as and an antibiotic if an infection has occurred from the rash
——
A poison ivy rash will eventually go away on its own. But the itching can be hard to deal with and make it difficult to sleep. If you scratch your blisters, they may become infected. Here are some steps you can take to help control the itching:

Apply an over-the-counter corticosteroid cream for the first few days
Apply calamine lotion
Take oral antihistamines, such as diphenhydramine (Benadryl, others), which may also help you sleep better
Soak in a cool-water bath containing an oatmeal-based bath product (Aveeno)
Place cool, wet compresses on the affected area for 15 to 30 minutes several times a day

Sitting is the new smoking! A new study by German researchers find sitting too much is the new smoking: raising your risk of diabetes, heart disease, and cancer! Don’t let sitting all day take a toll on your health...Here are a few ways to sit less and exercise more throughout your day!
——
1. Work out when you can: just a 10 minute break can do a lot of good. It can be as easy as doing 10 jumping jacks next to your desk
2. Walk: One way to add a little more movement in your day is to incorporate walking. Walk to the printer or the restroom, or even around the building
3. Stand Up: find an excuse to stand up. Standing desks are a great alternative as they get you on your feet!
4. Use a Stability Ball: when sitting on your ball, your abs become engaged
5. Take the Stairs: to and from your office can have a real impact on your activity level

It’s time to get moving 🏃🏽‍♂️🏃🏻‍♀️
