We made our patient a flexible partial denture with flexible clasps. She did not want any implants or a metal partial.
For comfort, it will rest on all her remaining natural teeth to minimize pressure on her tissue, and to prevent food from lodging.

I had lunch with my dental school classmate Dr. Donald Sze. He is a retired oral surgeon and rear admiral for the US Navy.
He is the fifth Chinese-American to earn the rank of rear admiral, and the Navy’s first Chinese-American Admiral with a dental degree.
Dr. Sze and I will celebrate our 40th reunion from Rutgers Dental School in a few months.

What they didn’t teach us in dental school

Partial dentures can be made more comfortably without a bulky metal framework. The best way is to make them with resistant stops, using the contours of the teeth. The denture will not put pressure on the gum tissue, and the tissue will recede less with pressure from mastication. Also a proper design will have intimate contact against the natural teeth to prevent food from lodging, and maintaining stability of both the natural teeth and prosthesis. Lastly, they can be relined if necessary.
The last photo shows a classical metal partial denture, which are often uncomfortable and bulky.

What They Didn't Teach Us in School

Let's follow this case to completion in a few weeks:
•The selection of Dentsply Sirona teeth will give our patient the maximum esthetic appeal.
•I prefer to set the denture teeth myself, instead of the dental lab.
• We will utilize a stainless steel mesh to reinforce the new upper denture and prevent fracturing. This will take into account the patient’s strong biting forces of the opposing natural lower teeth.
•We will place four implant housings in the denture to snap it into place.
