How does music therapy help patients?

"Music therapy can help to relieve pain and reduce stress and anxiety for the patient, resulting in physiological changes, including:

• Improved respiration

• Lower blood pressure

• Improved cardiac output

• Reduced heart rate

• Relaxed muscle tension

Music therapy has been shown to have a significant effect on a patient’s perceived effectiveness of treatment, self-reports of pain reduction, relaxation, respiration rate, behaviorally observed and self-reported anxiety levels, and patient choice of anesthesia and amount of analgesic medication."

What is palliative care? Oftentimes, there is confusion around "palliative care" and "hospice care", and unfortunately, and incorrectly, these terms are frequently used interchangeably by some people in the community, even medical professionals.

Palliative care is a specialized type of health care that focuses on the comfort, symptom management, and quality of life for patients with complex, life-limiting or life-threatening conditions. It focuses on providing care regardless of your ultimate goal. Goals could include obtaining a cure, prolonging life, or being as comfortable as possible at the end of life. In pediatric palliative care, the child’s need for services is not based on their prognosis and the child does not need to be dying to qualify for services.

Hospice is the holistic and comprehensive care of patients and their families at the end of life. Hospice care includes a vast interdisciplinary team who are experts in the physical, psychosocial, spiritual, and cultural aspects of dying. Patient’s are eligible for hospice services if they have a life expectancy of 6 months or less (if the illness runs its normal course).

Here is a great resource discussing pediatric palliative care:

Pediatric palliative care is specialized medical care for children with serious illnesses. The goal is to improve quality of life for the child and family.

Hello! The caring and compassionate team at Libertana Care Partners has been providing pediatric palliative care services for patients and their families at home since 2013, previously under the Medi-Cal Partners for Children-Pediatric Palliative Care Waiver. While the waiver program ended at the end of 2018, we have continued to provide support to our amazing patients and their families as a fully covered benefit under Medi-Cal and Medi-Cal Managed Care to patients residing in LA County.

This service continues to provide an additional layer of support for patients and their families to address the impact of complex illnesses and medical conditions, while at the same time, patients can continue to receive routine care and curative treatments. Our team of Registered Nurses, social workers, massage therapists, music therapists, art therapists, and chaplains work together to promote patient and family comfort and quality of life by addressing issues related to pain and symptoms, linking families into community resources to address emotional, social and financial needs, providing counseling services and sibling support, assisting with getting durable medical equipment and supplies not covered by insurance, and providing spiritual care.

At this time, in response to COVID19, we are providing our services over telehealth the ensure the safety of our patients. If you feel that your child would benefit from our service, please do not hesitate to call us to discuss the referral process. Additionally, patients who do not currently have Medi-Cal may qualify for services through the Institutional Deeming process. If you would like information about this, please reach out to us at (818) 902 5000.
