The family historian’s holiday wishlist is HERE!

Genealogy Standards - Because arguing about citation formats at Thanksgiving dinner is a love language 💕 (This is THE manual for doing genealogy research the right way - your ancestors deserve proper documentation!)

A to Zax - The alphabet book that goes harder than it needs to, teaching kids about genealogy terms from A to Z. Warning: may cause tiny humans to start asking about probate records

Everyday Life in Early America - Ever wondered what your 1700s ancestors actually did all day? Spoiler: it wasn’t scrolling TikTok. This deep dive into colonial daily life will make you grateful for washing machines and also deeply respect your hardy forebears.

Perfect for the family member who:

👉Has 47 browser tabs open about the 1850 census
👉Knows more dead relatives than living ones
👉Gets genuinely excited about finding a ship manifest
👉Uses “allegedly” before every family story

Who’s getting these wrapped up under the tree?

Interviewing people is one of the best ways to capture and preserve your family’s history. Our relative may not like it, so bring them candy and gifts. Present those first and go from there. 🥳🎄

Maybe next year I will research a FULL month long. 🤞🤞

Today’s genealogy question is: Can AI / ChatGPT help me find historical records or useful databases for my ancestors? (Or help me find my ancestors?)

The quick answer is yes, but it cannot pull documents. Instead it can help you get organized and figure out where to look.

But! Always double check your everything!! AI can be wrong and I’d like to make things up.

What Is a Story Seed?

A Story Seed is a family history fact or moment that contains the potential for a compelling narrative. It’s the difference between a genealogical record and a story worth telling.

Not a Story Seed: “My grandmother immigrated to America.”

A Story Seed: “My grandmother left her children behind when she immigrated, promising to send for them, but it took seven years.”

On December 3rd we will be discussing what is a Good Story Seed and What is Not.

Can I research my ancestors for free?

Yes! But you need to know a few tricks.

First, GET A LIBRARY CARD! Loads of libraries have access to sites like Ancestry and MyHeritage.

Second, UTILIZE FREE TRIAL PERIODS! Get organized. Know what you’re looking for and use that trial period to get the documents you need in your short, free, access to the site.

Third, CHECK OUT CYNDI’S LIST! And don’t forget to look at historical societies, genealogical societies, and National or State Archives!!

Fourth, FamilySearch. It’s always free. Yes, you might have to access it at a library that is affiliated with the FamilySearch library — but who doesn’t want to spend a day at the library?

What are your family history questions? Drop them below!

Perhaps the principality is now a parking lot in Belgium, but why not claim it? I mean, if you’re European, chances are Charlemagne is somewhere on your tree.

The very least he could do was leave you a car park.
