With baseball season right around the corner, and still buzzing from LAB Sports Day, we thought now would be a good time to share this classic from our Vista Vault. In this picture, one of the most important figures in Vista’s history, George Konheim, has just hit a home run as he plays ball with Vista Residents.
A little more about George and his impact:
After founding a string of successful business ventures in Ohio, Konheim and his family moved to Los Angeles in 1947, where he founded the Buckeye Construction Company. He became active in fundraising activities at Vista Del Mar in the early 1950s as a way to repay the kindnesses he had received from Jewish charities as a child. As a builder, Konheim’s priority was replacing the 45-year-old cottages with new, state-of-the-art units. Within five years of his becoming President, the old, two-story cottages were gone and the Handler, Taper, Parvin, and Moss-Price-Shore Cottages had been built in their place. He presided over the establishment of the first on-grounds school, a new medical center, the Lindheimer Prevocational School, numerous renovation projects, and the establishment of a new support group called the President’s Club. Throughout his many years as President (and Chairman, as the title became during his tenure), Konheim sought to build Vista Del Mar into a full-service agency for child welfare needs, and he made great strides towards accomplishing this goal through mergers with other agencies. The first of these was Reiss-Davis in 1976, followed by Home-SAFE in 1979 and Julia Ann Singer Center in 1982. After the tragic death of his son Neil in an airliner fire, Konheim devoted his considerable energies to the Neil Konheim “Know Your Body” program, a nutrition program for schools. Konheim remained active on the Board after retiring from the Chairmanship until shortly before his death in 2001.
