You don’t have to go far to find somewhere that feels completely different.

If you went to the Venice boardwalk, you might think… this isn’t for me.

Too busy. Too chaotic. Maybe a bit overwhelming. Not what you’ve seen in the movies.

But just a 10–15 minute walk away…everything changes.

The Venice Canals.

Quiet. Peaceful. Safe.
A completely different experience - just a few streets away.

That’s the thing about solo travel…

It doesn’t have to start with a big trip.
Sometimes it’s just about exploring your own city - and finding the places that feel right for you.

You don’t have to leave your city to feel like you’ve gone somewhere completely different.

Step into Union Station, and it feels like you’ve stepped back in time.

The art deco architecture, the diffused light, the airy space…sometimes hushed and quiet, people lingering, other times chaotic and noisy as people come and go.

And for a moment,
you’re somewhere between past and present.

It’s easy to think solo travel has to be a big trip…
flights, plans, somewhere far away.

But sometimes it’s just this.

A few hours.
A different place.
A shift in how you feel.

Where could you explore in your hometown that would make you feel safe yet energized?

I wasn’t looking for an adventure that day…I just didn’t want to be around people.

The place I wanted to go was too busy - instead
I drove farther into Griffith Park, parked, and walked up a trail - not really knowing where I was going….

And as I climbed higher - the fog closed in…
until the freeway disappeared, the parking lot vanished,
and the whole world just fell away.

It was just me, eucalyptus trees, their heady scent in the air, a lone red-tailed hawk soaring overhead… and silence.

It wasn’t a grand adventure.
It wasn’t even planned.

But it was exactly the reset that I needed.

Sometimes solo travel doesn’t start with a flight…
it starts with a small decision.

A choice to go somewhere,
and just experience it.

What would your version of this look like?

If you’ve been thinking about solo travel… this is a lovely place to start 🌅
Not with a big trip,
but with a simple moment like this.

A walk along the beach.
Time to sit and think.
Or even trying something new — like a surf lesson or paddleboarding.

You don’t have to go far or do anything complicated.

Just step out for a little while…
and see how it feels 💚

Where do you feel comfortable starting your solo adventure??? Is this too easy or too much - let me know in the comments…have a great weekend - what ever you do!!!!

Solo travel doesn’t have to start with a big trip.
It can begin with something as simple as this.
A quiet walk.
A peaceful place.
A moment to slow down and reset.

The Chinese Garden at Huntington Gardens is one of those places that makes it easy to slow down and pretend you are in a far and distant place…

Start close to home.
Follow your curiosity.
See how it feels 💚

Places like this might feel far away.
Like something for “one day”…
when you have more time, more confidence, or someone to go with.

But every solo journey starts much closer than that.

Not with a castle in Scotland —
but with a small decision.

→ going somewhere on your own
→ trying something new
→ taking that first step without waiting for anyone else

That’s how it begins.

And over time, those small steps turn into moments like this.

If you’ve been thinking about solo travel, but it feels a bit out of reach…

Start small.

You might be surprised where it leads!!!

This is one of my favorite places on the planet - Highlands of Scotland - and somewhere fabulous for solo trip when you’re ready - friendly people, gorgeous scenery and an adventure around every corner!!!

Follow your curiosity…on Kauai, I loved my photography tour - saw secret places and lived like a local - will be going back. Having seen the news story of Bethany Hamilton losing her arm to that bloody tiger shark when she was 13, then watching her incredible story and pure resilience and sheer grit in her film Unstoppable - it was surreal to be near where she was attacked - and no - I did not go in the water….I have such huge respect for her - she epitomises what someone can do if they love something - surfing - and refuse to let a little thing like one arm get in the way…Her surfboard and bikini are in the Oceanside Surf Museum, if you are ever near San Diego… she is a reminder to go after what you want, live joyously and let nothing hold you back. ☀️ 🌺

When going solo - always fake confidence, walk as if you’re local - never look lost, even if you are, plus keep your Spidey-sense on high alert and trust your instincts; if somewhere or someone does not feel right - remove yourself immediately….don’t wait to be proved right!!!!

Booking a day tour of the city or doing Hop-on/off buses are great for first day to get lay of the land and find whet you want I spend more time….

Love Honolulu - highest ranking US city on the list - for me - it’s all about awareness - when going solo in a big city 🌃

The Icelandic capital topped a new ranking for its safety, charm, and easy access to natural wonders.

RIP Eric Dane - died at 53 today after an impossible 10 month fight with ALS - loved him in Grey’s Anatomy as Dr Mark Sloan (McSteamy)- and in The Last Ship as CO Tom Chandler - so sad - it is an evil disease that relentlessly strips you of your power…..sending love to his family….

It is a reminder that we never know what will happen to us - we don’t know how much time we have on this crazy planet 🌎

Start moving towards a life that excited you - do something today that makes you feel like you!!!! Go on a solo date in your home town - tell someone you love them - do not go quietly into that dark night - Yvonne ❤️‍🩹💐❤️

Fascinating article - I love the idea of immediate translation of a foreign language using my Air Pods - although, knowing me, I will still learn the basics of a language to feel more part of the culture…

And I have been having fun with Chat GPT on planning a trip and things to do - close to home - you can promt - give me 5 fun free events happening near me, or plan a cultural day in a certain neighborhood, with cafe/dining suggestions, or name 10 places to visit that tourists always miss - you can use the prompts for exploring your home town or traveling across the world!!!! 🌍
