After much reflection (and a whole lot of heart), I’ve decided to officially close the chapter on Welcome Home Baby—including the social media pages, website, and new parenting online school. This has been such a meaningful part of my journey, and I’m endlessly grateful for every family I’ve supported and every sweet baby I’ve helped welcome into the world.

But over time, life throws you curve balls and you never know where your journey will take you!! While I am still a Certified Newborn Specialist and will continue to work in the private newborn care field, I am now also a Certified Veterinary Assistant—and it all began with my own sweet cat, Milo, being diagnosed with FIP. That experience changed everything!

In Milo’s honor, I started a nonprofit organization dedicated to saving other cats facing this devastating illness. It’s called Milo’s Bravest Friends, and it’s become my heart’s work.

If you’ve ever followed, supported, or cheered me on—thank you. Truly. And if you’d like to stay connected and follow this next chapter, I’d love that. You can find me at and instagram and TikTok as well as MilosBravestFriends.org.

From baby snuggles to cat cuddles, thank you for being part of the journey.

With love,
Sara Nieves

I am Sara Nieves, and I am the owner of Welcome Home Baby. I am a triple certified Newborn Care Specialist (ICNCS, CNS, AdvCNCS(ncsa)) and the founder/owner of Welcome Home Baby.

I grew up in North Kingstown, Rhode Island and was always drawn to caring for little ones. Days after my high school graduation, I left on a volunteer trip to work with a government run infant care program in Ayacucho, Peru. That trip cemented my passion for newborn care and in 2016, Welcome Home Baby was born.

I have a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Salve Regina University in Newport, Rhode Island (). I completed my Newborn Care Training through NCTA (), then went on to be triple certified though the Newborm Care Specialist Association () and Newborn Care International.

I have spent the last 10 years serving the Los Angeles/Orange County CA new parent community. My wife and I just recently purchased a home in New Haven area, Connecticut where we now live with our 3 cats and provide foster care for special needs cats going through medical treatment.

I look forward to getting to know more of the Welcome HomeBaby community! Have any questions? Just ask!

Some of the questions I am asked most often, especially living in sunny southern California, are about safe sunscreen for babies. As the warmer summer weather approaches, it is important to remember some sun protection basics for your baby.

How can you best protect your baby from the sun? Babies under 6 months of age should be kept out of direct sunlight when outdoors, especially during peak hours (10am-4pm). Whenever possible, move your baby to the shade under a tree, umbrella or stroller canopy with plenty of air flow. Dress baby in lightweight clothing that covers the arms and legs and use brimmed hats that shade the neck to prevent sunburn. (AAP)

When can your baby wear sunscreen? Until a few years ago, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) advised against the use of sunblock for babies under 6 months old. However, the AAP's new sun protection guidelines say that if adequate clothing and shade are not available, parents can apply a minimal amount of baby-safe sunscreen to small areas of an infant's body, such as the face, the back of the hands and the tops of the feet, starting when your baby is a newborn. Living in southern California (or other hot, sunny climates), escaping the sun is not always possible with an active lifestyle, so it is important that you know about the safest sunscreen options!

What makes a sunscreen "safe"? Sunscreens generally fall into one of two categories, chemical or mineral. The main difference between chemical and mineral sunscreens can be found in their ingredients and the way they protect from the sun. A chemical sunscreen contains one or more active ingredients that are non-natural, chemical compounds.

Here are a few examples of chemical ingredients commonly found in sunscreen.

* Oxybenzone
* Avobenzone
* Octinoxate
* Homosalate
* Octisalate
* Octocrylene

Despite the fact that these ingredients have all been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), research shows potential risks for several of them, specifically Octinoxate, Oxybenzone, Octocrylene, and Padimate O. The active ingredients in chemical sunscreens, like the ones listed above, are effective because they absorb the sun’s UV rays. Then, through a chemical reaction, the sunscreen dissipates the UV rays. (3)

The risk is found when trace amounts of the chemicals found in chemical sunscreens can trickle into your bloodstream. Once in your bloodstream, they can filter into other bodily fluids, such as breastmilk. A study published by a team of scientists, led by Dr. Margret Schlumpf of the University of Zurich (4), found trace amounts of at least one sunscreen chemical in the breast milk of 76.5 percent of the women they tested. This raises serious questions about breastfeeding safety. Since these chemical ingredients can enter the bloodstream of an adult, chemical sunscreens on the delicate skin of a child can also quickly enter the body. Studies show that chemical ingredients in sunscreens can increase the risk of endometriosis in women, decrease s***m concentration in men, and lower testosterone levels in adolescent males among other potentially dangerous effects. (5)

"A mineral sunscreen is just what it sounds like—a sunscreen that uses minerals as its active ingredients. The minerals most often used are zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. Both of these ingredients occur naturally, although they can also be created synthetically.

Mineral sunscreens work in a completely different way than chemical sunscreens. Remember, chemical sunscreens pe*****te your skin and offer protection by dissipating UV rays. By contrast, mineral sunscreens simply sit on top of your skin and reflect UV rays away from your body. Mineral sunscreens are sometimes called physical sunscreens because they provide a physical barrier between your skin and the sun’s rays." (3)

A mineral sunscreen is the safest option for baby, children of all ages, and adults alike. A mineral sunscreen is also the healthiest option for the environment and our oceans! When looking for a safe, mineral sunscreen for your baby (and yourself), the active ingredient I am looking for is a non-nano zinc oxide. Zinc oxide is the only ingredient that has unequivocally been tested to be safe on infants and studied for many years, it is the same active ingredient in many diaper creams on the market.

What baby sunscreen do I personally recommend? My own personal recommendation is thinkbaby thinksport Thinkbaby Sunscreen. (WHB Affiliate link: https://amzn.to/3QXCceP) This is not a sponsored post or advertisement from the Thinkbaby/Thinksport company, purely my own personal opinion and recommendation based on trying so many sunscreen options over the years! Thinkbaby has had a rating of '1' from the Environmental Working Group since 2010, it is a non-nano zinc oxide formulation, is non-oily and applies easily, it smells amazing, they do not do any animal testing, and it is paraben, phthalates, PABA and 1,4 dioxane free with no Avobenzone, Oxybenzone, or UV Chemical absorbers. It is available in a lotion, stick, and now a spray form. The company also makes a ThinkSport version for kids and adults.

I am so excited to share the latest course that just dropped here at The Welcome Home Baby School!

You do not want to miss this one! Whether you are a new or expectant parent, caregiver, or professional, there is so much information in this amazing course!

This 3-part course is taught by Health Psychologist, Board Certified Behavior Analyst, and Certified Pediatric Sleep Consultant Charlsie Myers, PhD, BCBA of Quietude Sleep Consulting,. Here, caregivers will learn everything they need to know about infant sleep to help their little one get the sleep they need for their optimal development. Part one of the course will cover the research demonstrating the importance of sleep for babies and then go over what is meant by the term sleep “training” (and a lot of outdated myths that circulate about this topic). Part two covers the all-important information on setting up a safe sleep environment and the top 10 tips for preparing to sleep train so that everyone is set up for success. Finally, part three will go over the most common sleep training methods (and some common ways to modify them), from how to implement each method, to when they are most ideal and less ideal, so that caregivers can determine what will work best for their family.

On December 29, 2022, the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act (PWFA) was signed by President Biden. In a landmark move towards fostering fairness and equality, the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act is set to come into effect next week.. But what does this mean for pregnant and postpartum employees?

Put simply, this law allows pregnant and postpartum workers to ask for changes to make it easier to do their jobs.

This act is a significant stride forward in protecting the rights and well-being of pregnant employees. By guaranteeing reasonable accommodations and non-discrimination, it aims to create a supportive work environment for expectant parents. Let's dive into what this act entails and how it will benefit those it protects.

What is the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act?
The Pregnant Workers Fairness Act is a piece of legislation designed to ensure that pregnant employees receive fair treatment and protection in the workplace. It addresses the challenges faced by pregnant workers, providing guidelines for reasonable accommodations and prohibiting discrimination based on pregnancy, childbirth, or related medical conditions.

Who does it protect?
The act extends its protections to pregnant workers, including those who are planning to become pregnant, currently pregnant, or have recently given birth. It covers employees of “covered employers” who have known limitations related to pregnancy, childbirth, or related medical conditions. ”Covered employers” include private and public sector employers with at least 15 employees, Congress, Federal agencies, employment agencies, and labor organizations.

One of the pivotal aspects of the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act is the requirement for employers to provide reasonable accommodations. These accommodations are adjustments made to the work environment or job duties that enable pregnant employees to carry out their work safely and without risking their health or the health of their baby. Some examples of reasonable accommodations may include:
1. Providing seating or allowing more frequent breaks to alleviate fatigue or discomfort.
2. Modifying work schedules to accommodate prenatal appointments or medical treatments.
3. Assigning lighter duties or adjusting physical tasks to avoid potential hazards.
4. Offering temporary transfers to less physically demanding roles during pregnancy.

The act emphasizes the importance of open communication between employers and pregnant employees. It encourages meaningful dialogue to identify and implement appropriate accommodations.

The impending implementation of the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act marks a significant step forward in creating a more inclusive and equitable workplace for expectant parents. By guaranteeing reasonable accommodations and preventing discrimination, this act empowers pregnant employees to continue their careers while safeguarding their health and that of their unborn child.

What challenges do gay male parents face?
As a society, we often focus on the issues surrounding the LGBTQIA+ community as a whole, or as individuals. However, there are so many groups within the community to consider—each with its own set of struggles, setbacks, and challenges.
That includes gay dads.
It can be difficult enough for people in same-sex relationships to start a family. But, once you’ve overcome that hurdle, it’s not always smooth sailing on the other side.

I am so proud to share the Welcome Home Baby School course “The Gay Dad Experience”. This course digs deeper into some of the challenges gay male parents face today. Hopefully, as recognition and awareness start to build, these challenges will eventually become a thing of the past.

This course is taught by Leor Ram, LMFT, LPCC, NCC, CGP,
President and owner of Integrative Psychotherapy Group and a psychotherapist who focuses on working with the LGBTQIA+ community offering affirmative therapy.

I so highly recommend this course not only for new and expecting gay dads, but also anyone who supports, works with, or loves this new parent population. The Welcome Home Baby School is 100% LGBT owned and this course is instructed by not only an incredible LMFT, but also a gay dad himself.
