What is the difference between scoliosis and kyphosis?
Scoliosis and kyphosis are spinal deformities that can affect the curvature of the spine. However, there are some key differences between the two conditions:
1. Definition: Scoliosis is characterized by an abnormal side-to-side curvature and rotation of the spine, while kyphosis is characterized by an excessive front-to-back curvature of the spine, often in the upper back or thoracic region.
2. Appearance: Scoliosis can cause the spine to twist or rotate, resulting in a visible curve that can be seen from the front or back. Kyphosis on the other hand, results in a hunchback appearance, with the upper back rounding forward.
3. Causes: Scoliosis can be caused by a variety of factors, including congenital abnormalities, neuromuscular conditions, or unknown causes (idiopathic scoliosis). Kyphosis can also have congenital, neuromuscular, and idiopathic origins, as well as poor posture, degenerative disc disease, osteoporosis, or spinal fractures.
If you’re in pain, you don’t have to suffer in silence. Non-surgical treatments are available.
