🎭 What Wicked Can Teach Us About ADHD 🧙‍♀️

Last night, I had the pleasure of revisiting Wicked, the iconic musical and movie that takes us behind the scenes of the Land of Oz. Beyond its stunning music and powerful story, Wicked offers a surprising connection to the ADHD journey.

One line that particularly struck me was: “Everyone deserves the chance to fly.”
For many with ADHD, life can feel like being tethered to the ground by misunderstanding, self-doubt, and societal expectations. But this message is a reminder that everyone—regardless of their struggles or differences—deserves to soar and discover their full potential.

Here’s how the story connects:

1. Misunderstood Brilliance: Elphaba, the “green girl,” is judged for being different. Similarly, individuals with ADHD are often misunderstood, with their creativity, passion, and energy overshadowed by stigma. But, like Elphaba, their unique wiring often holds the key to extraordinary potential.

2. Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria (RSD): Elphaba’s deep emotional struggles mirror the intense feelings of rejection that many with ADHD experience. Her resilience reminds us that these feelings don’t define us—they’re part of the journey to self-acceptance.

3. Breaking Free from Norms: Elphaba refuses to conform to societal expectations, choosing instead to “defy gravity.” For those with ADHD, embracing their authenticity and strengths often means breaking free from rigid norms to redefine success on their own terms.

4. Support and Connection: Glinda’s eventual support of Elphaba highlights the power of understanding and partnership. For individuals with ADHD, having a strong support system can be life-changing.

At Sanctum Healthcare, we believe everyone deserves the chance to fly. Supporting individuals with ADHD isn’t just about managing symptoms—it’s about helping them embrace their unique narrative, uncover their strengths, and thrive.

ADHD and Sleep have a complex 2 way relationship. ADHD makes sleep worse and not sleeping means your ADHD gets worse. Managing one without the other is not going to give you best chances of successfully managing either condition.

Transitions, like starting a new school year or moving to a new class can make ADHD symptoms more noticeable—especially when kids are expected to become more independent and there’s less external support (or scaffolding). 📚🚶‍♂️

Without the usual routines or help, children with ADHD may struggle more with focus, organisation and emotional regulation. 🌪️

Providing structure and guidance during these times can make a big difference! 💡

Have you heard of Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria (RSD) before?

People with ADHD often experience Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria (RSD), a heightened emotional response to perceived criticism or rejection.

💔 This intense emotional reaction can cause feelings of deep pain, frustration and embarrassment, even if the rejection is imagined.

😔RSD can lead to avoiding situations where criticism might occur, impacting confidence, relationships and overall well-being.

💬 Recognising and managing these emotional responses is key to living well with ADHD.

🌸 💡Did You Know?

The luteal phase of the menstrual cycle, which occurs after ovulation, often worsens ADHD symptoms in women.

🌸 During this phase, oestrogen levels drop and progesterone rises, diminishing the effectiveness of stimulant medications for ADHD. 🧠

Many women report increased difficulties with focus, irritability and emotional regulation during this time. 😣

Adjusting treatment around the menstrual cycle can help manage these fluctuations. 🌿
