Meet one of our 2025 to 2026 Secondary Pilot Project Awardees: Kate Marquess, PhD, MA, MPH, is a Postdoctoral Research Scholar in the Department of Environmental Health and Engineering at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Her research focuses on better understanding how early-life exposure to environmental chemicals, such as per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), flame retardants, phthalates, and pesticides, impacts child growth and development. Her research aims to inform prevention strategies and policies that protect children and improve their health.

Congratulations to Dr. Marquess on this well-deserved award!

Meet our 2025–2026 Secondary Pilot Project Awardee, Jonatan Ottino-González, PhD. Dr Ottino-Gonzalezis a neuropsychologist and neuroscientist whose research focuses on how early life nutrition shapes neurodevelopment and obesity risk across childhood and adolescence. His work combines dietary assessment, neuropsychological testing, and magnetic resonance imaging data to better understand how diet quality influences neurocognitive outcomes. He has contributed to several large scale studies across diverse populations and brings expertise in advanced statistical modeling, MRI data processing, and reproducible research methods. His goal is to inform early prevention strategies that support both neurodevelopmental and metabolic health.

Congratulations, Dr. Ottino González!

Meet one of our 2025 to 2026 Secondary Pilot Project Awardees: Ingrid Rivera Iñiguez, PhD, NC. Dr. Rivera Iñiguez’s project examines the role of family, behavioral, and psychosocial factors in shaping ultra processed food consumption among Latino children, who experience disproportionately high rates of obesity and diet related health risks, particularly in low income households. Using baseline data from the FRESH LC randomized controlled trial, this study analyzes dietary intake among Latino parent and child dyads to identify key influences on ultra processed food consumption within the family context. Findings from this work will inform culturally tailored, family centered strategies to reduce obesity risk and improve cardiometabolic health in Latino communities.
Congratulations, Dr. Rivera Iñiguez, on this well deserved award!

Meet one of our 2025 to 2026 Secondary Pilot Project Awardees: Alexandria Descarpentrie, PhD. Dr. Descarpentrie’s project focuses on understanding how social and behavioral factors shape early life health outcomes in Latino children in Southern California, communities that face persistent health disparities driven by economic, environmental, and structural challenges. Using data from the EL SENDERO longitudinal cohort, this study examines how early life social determinants of health, diet, physical activity, and family and neighborhood conditions collectively influence metabolic and neurodevelopmental outcomes at age six. Findings from this work aim to inform interventions that reduce structural barriers and improve long term health in high need Latino communities.

Congratulations, Dr. Descarpentrie, on this well deserved award!

The biggest evidence signals in the new Dietary Guidelines weren’t about protein, saturated fat, beef or dairy — they were about highly processed foods, sugary beverages, and whole grains.

These are common-ground issues with measurable effects and broad benefits.
They’re also highly actionable at both policy level (school meals, WIC/SNAP, procurement) and household level (kitchen swaps + small shifts).
Small shifts. Big impact.
