The dangers of fat accumulation
Excess fat, especially abdominal and visceral fat, can lead to numerous health problems and increase the risk of several chronic diseases. Here are some common conditions associated with fat accumulation:
Cardiovascular disease
High blood pressure: Fat accumulation, especially in the abdomen, increases pressure on the heart and leads to high blood pressure. Chronic high blood pressure increases the risk of heart disease and stroke.
Coronary artery disease: Excess fat, especially visceral fat, can cause atherosclerosis (thickening and narrowing of blood vessels), which can lead to heart problems and other cardiovascular diseases.
Diabetes
Type 2 diabetes: Fat accumulation in the abdomen leads to insulin resistance, where cells no longer respond properly to this hormone. This is a major cause of type 2 diabetes. Obesity is one of the main risk factors.
Increased cholesterol
Fat accumulation, particularly an increase in “bad” cholesterol (LDL), raises blood cholesterol levels and increases the risk of atherosclerosis.
Fatty liver disease
Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD): excess visceral fat can accumulate in the liver, causing fatty liver disease. This can lead to inflammation, cirrhosis, and even liver failure.
Sleep apnea
Fat accumulation can narrow the airways and increase the risk of obstructive sleep apnea. This condition is characterized by repeated interruptions in breathing during sleep and can cause daytime fatigue, memory problems, and heart problems.
Collagen loss and skin aging
Sagging skin and wrinkles: excess fat can change the shape of the body and the structure of the skin, causing loss of elasticity, sagging, and the formation of wrinkles.
Joint disorders
Arthritis: obesity increases pressure on the knees, hips, and back, causing joint wear and arthritis.
Certain types of cancer
Breast, colon, and uterine cancer: Obesity is associated with an increased risk of certain cancers. Fat accumulation influences hormone levels and can promote tumor growth.
Gallstones
Excess cholesterol and fat in the gallbladder can lead to the formation of gallstones. Obesity is a significant risk factor.
Mental health issues
Depression and anxiety: Obesity can negatively affect self-image and lead to feelings of depression, anxiety disorders, and other emotional problems.
Hormonal imbalances
Excess body fat, particularly in the abdominal area, can cause hormonal imbalances, such as increased levels of cortisol (the stress hormone) and estrogen, which can alter metabolism, the immune system, and reproductive functions.
