Worden’s Four Tasks of Mourning: Holiday Edition 💜

This holiday season, grief can feel especially heavy. Our clinical team, who train the volunteers leading OUR HOUSE grief support groups, adapted Worden’s Four Tasks of Mourning to help guide those navigating the holidays.

Developed by psychologist William Worden, this model is at the heart of the support we offer at OUR HOUSE.

Here’s a quick overview:
1️⃣ Accept the reality of the death
2️⃣ Process the pain of grief
3️⃣ Adjust to a world without the person who died, which can feel particularly difficult during the holidays
4️⃣ Find an enduring connection while moving forward with your person, not moving on from them.

Swipe through the carousel for more details.

A child was asked to complete the sentence, “One thing I really like about OUR HOUSE is…”

Their handwritten response says it all:

“I like that it is a safe space to talk about my brother.” 💜

At OUR HOUSE Grief Support Center, children and adults are given space to share, remember, and talk openly about the people they love in a supported group setting. This is made possible thanks to your generosity.

As the year comes to a close, please consider making a donation to help ensure these safe spaces remain available for children, teens, adults, and families throughout Los Angeles County. Please go to the link in our bio or in the comments to give today.

We are proud to congratulate Laurie Burrows Grad, who was honored at the House of Hope Gala this October and has now shared her story with LA Voyage.

The article features the speech Laurie delivered at the gala, offering insight into widowhood and how grief can reshape daily life, relationships, and a sense of belonging. Through her openness, she encourages greater understanding and compassion for those navigating life after the death of a spouse.

With the support of OUR HOUSE, Laurie found strength during a difficult chapter, and her reflections help others recognize that grief support is available.

Congratulations, Laurie, and thank you for sharing your story so other Angelinos know they can turn to OUR HOUSE.

During this holiday season, we want to pause and share our gratitude with our amazing community of supporters, volunteers, and donors. 💜

Your generosity helps ensure that children, teens, adults, and families across Los Angeles County have access to grief support, especially during a season that can feel both joyful and tender. 🕊️

The need for compassionate care doesn’t take a holiday, and every gift helps provide safe spaces where no one has to navigate grief alone.

If you’d like to help sustain this work, please visit the link in our bio or in the comments to make a year-end donation.
