One of the things that surprises my client the most is how much they like eating an anti-inflammatory diet. Not only because it makes them feel amazing from the inside out, but also because the food tastes so good! I want to show you how easy (and delicious) it is to eat this way. So, I’ve thrown together a day of anti-inflammatory meals for you to try. The menu not only includes anti-inflammatory foods in each of the meals and snacks, it also eliminates the most common inflammatory food triggers that we remove in the main elimination diet I use with my clients. I invite you to try this anti-inflammatory meal plan for a day and see how good you feel! ⁣

There are several common triggers of chronic inflammation in the body, and one of them is food.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
The best way to tackle food-induced inflammation is to adopt an anti-inflammatory nutritional approach.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
I typically work with my clients to help them implement an elimination diet so that they can discover what their own personalized anti-inflammatory diet looks like.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
During an elimination diet, you remove the most common inflammatory triggers for a large percentage of the population while simultaneously eating anti-inflammatory real, whole foods (check out my slide show on “How to Reduce Chronic Inflammation with Food” several posts back for more details on elimination diets). ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
One of the best ways to add anti-inflammatory foods to your diet is through herbs and spices. Cinnamon, garlic, ginger, oregano, rosemary, and turmeric all have powerful anti-inflammatory properties and they make your food taste delicious. By adding these foods to your diet, you are actively reducing inflammation, which when done in tandem with removing inflammatory foods, can help greatly reduce inflammatory symptoms in your body.⁣⁣

As someone who used to accept nothing less than perfection from myself, I have really had to practice giving myself grace. ⁣

A mentor of mine has consistently demonstrated grace toward himself and others, and it changed my life. By seeing that there is another way other than berating myself, I’m not only more kind and compassionate with myself, I’m more understanding and forgiving of others. ⁣

So what does grace toward yourself look like? I believe it looks like this: when you make a mistake take accountability but do so without judging yourself, beating yourself up or going into a shame spiral. Examine the facts and where things went wrong. Apologize to yourself and others, express what you’ve learned and how you are going to show up differently next time. And, then always show up differently next time.⁣

We all make mistakes. We can either use them to punish ourselves and perpetuate self-hatred, or we can use our mistakes as a beautiful opportunity for learning and growth so that we can become better humans and make the world a better place.

This past Tuesday, I celebrated the 7-year anniversary of leaving my corporate law job to create a more meaningful life for myself.⁣

I’ve been reflecting on my journey and want to thank:⁣

The people who told me I was making a huge mistake, gave me looks of pity or implied it would be impossible to succeed. Thank you for inspiring and motivating me to let go of the need for validation. I’m so glad I decided to believe in myself and ignore the projections of your limiting beliefs. ⁣

My parents who, from the minute I told them I was going to give up my law career to become a nutritionist, gave me unwaivering support and always believed I would succeed. ⁣

My amazing clients for trusting in me to support them and for inspiring me with their transformations. ⁣

Myself, for continuing to trust in the deep knowing of my path; for not giving up; for all of the sacrifices that I made to get here; and for taking a huge and “crazy” leap of faith. ⁣

I am so so grateful. ⁣

Here are 7 Tips to Improve Your Gut Health Right Now: ⁣

𝐄𝐚𝐭 𝐅𝐨𝐨𝐝𝐬 𝐑𝐢𝐜𝐡 𝐢𝐧 𝐏𝐨𝐥𝐲𝐩𝐡𝐞𝐧𝐨𝐥𝐬: Polyphenols are special plant nutrients that have all sorts of benefits for your body, including your gut. These antioxidant compounds increase a very important beneficial bacteria called akkermansia muciniphila. Akkermansia can help with blood sugar and insulin issues and is important for the health of your gut mucosa and intestinal barrier function. I have found that my clients with gut issues who cannot tolerate prebiotics do well with polyphenols. ⁣

𝐓𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐃𝐞𝐞𝐩 𝐁𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐬 𝐁𝐞𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐄𝐚𝐭: Your parasympathetic nervous system controls your relaxation response AND your digestion. This means that you must be in a relaxed state to properly digest your food. When you are stressed and in “fight or flight mode” your sympathetic nervous system is driving things. When this happens, your digestion slows way down. This means that if you are stressed out, you’re going to have a much harder time to digest your food. The good news is that to better digest your food you can shift your body into a relaxed state very quickly by doing some deep breathing before you eat. ⁣

𝐂𝐡𝐞𝐰 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐅𝐨𝐨𝐝: Digestion begins in the mouth with chewing. The act of chewing itself begins to break down your food. And the longer you chew, the more the food has the opportunity to also be broken down by digestive enzymes in your saliva, including salivary amylase which breaks down complex carbs and lingual lipase which digests fat. Don’t skip this process! Slowing down and taking time to chew your food can have a hugely beneficial impact on your digestion.⁣

𝐓𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐅𝐢𝐬𝐡 𝐎𝐢𝐥 𝐒𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭: Omega-3 fatty acids reduce gut inflammation, among many other health benefits. Make sure you pick a good brand of fish oil that has been tested for heavy metals and other contaminants.⁣

My former client Killian Lopez reached out a couple of weeks ago. She was writing an article about the benefit of mindful eating for the gut and contacted me for some expert insight. I was so excited to help because this topic is often overlooked when speaking about gut health.

Mindful eating is about being fully present with your food, eating slowly and in a relaxed state, eating only when you're physically hungry, and stopping when you're full.

When you’re not present with your food and eat past the point of hunger, it can leave you feeling overly full, bloated, and unwell. And, if you eat quickly and in a stressed state, it also negatively impacts your digestion. Your parasympathetic nervous system controls your relaxation response AND your digestion. This means that you must be in a relaxed state to properly digest your food. When you are stressed and in “fight or flight mode” your sympathetic nervous system is driving things. When this happens, your digestion slows way down. This means that if you are stressed out, you’re going to have a much harder time to digest your food.

If you'd like to start using mindful eating to support your digestion but don't know where to start, I'm sharing some tools and tips to help on (direct link in my bio).
