Award Certificates?
Maybe.

New friendships?
Definitely.

Fame & Fortune?
Nope.
😂

So why DO people volunteer to be on the ERNC? It depends, but often it’s about an issue that someone cares about, a desire to participate in local decisions, or just because they care about the neighborhood. No matter what, you’ll learn something new, even if it’s just the Brown Act, the City of LA’s Code of Ethics (it might be stricter than what a Supreme Court Justice has to abide by!) or Robert’s Rules.

Whatever your reason is, if you’re interested, go to the link in our bio👆and fill out an application for an open seat! Then make sure to come to the meeting to the September meeting (Tuesday, Sept. 2, 7p at ER City Hall) to tell us about yourself.

There are currently 3 open seats, and they’re unrestricted, which means you don’t have to live in a particular sub-district.

See you there!

Seen in the wild:

New ERNC Board member and Board Secretary Mary O’Connor was out there in the heat with President Flor Chaidez this weekend - that’s volunteer dedication!

Mary is an 8-year resident of Eagle Rock, where she’s raising two kids and co-hosts a book club that meets at Taco Social 🌼📚 when she’s not at her full-time job in tech. 😅

As Board Secretary, Mary is part of the Executive Committee, and puts together the meeting agendas and makes sure they’re always posted 72 hours before a meeting. You can go to our website or to the message board outside ER City Hall to see an agenda for an upcoming meeting.

Welcome, Mary, and thank you for taking on EXTRA volunteer work!

Spotted in the wild:

Newly re-elected Vice President Alisa Sandoval was doing outreach at the Summer Concerts in the Park series this past weekend, listening to cover band Sergeant Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band! She’s joined by Assemblymember Jessica Caloza, and a Mystery Eagle Rocker.

Alisa has lived in Eagle Rock since she was two years old (she’s OG!) and when she’s not volunteering, she works as a lawyer. This is her second elected term as Sub-district 4 Director, and she was Chair of the Sustainability Committee in her last term.

Thank you for everything you do for the community, Alisa! đŸ„°

Happy August!

Tonight’s Board meeting features a lot of the “nuts & bolts” of the ERNC, including very useful info about how to apply for a Neighborhood Purpose Grant (NPG).

If you’re part of a non-profit or a public school and you have an idea for a project that will benefit the neighborhood, you might need some financial help. Tonight’s meeting is a great place to start! If you can’t make it, you can always email info@ernc.la with questions, or visit the link in our bio to apply for an NPG.

See you tonight - 7p at Eagle Rock City Hall! Note that there is an elevator and our meetings are accessible to all.

When she’s not volunteering, Flor is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and therapist.

Come to our next meeting (Tuesday, August 5th at 7p at ER City Hall) to see her in action as President!

Due to the upcoming holiday & quorum concerns, we’ve scheduled the July Board meeting for next Tuesday, July 8th, instead of the usual first Tuesday.

Join us next week to meet the neighbors who were elected/reelected and see what’s happening in Eagle Rock. Witness the “changing of the guard” as some people step down, and the new volunteers step up! And all sorts of other exciting things - we’re a fun group, you’ll see. đŸ€“

This Sunday, June 22, 2025, there’s a free, all-day community event at the Autry Museum designed to raise wildfire awareness and promote resilience education, particularly for those living in high-risk areas near the wildland-urban interface - which now includes most of Eagle Rock!

Included:
-sit-down classes for adults on topics such as home hardening, defensible space, emergency evacuation plans, and fire behavior. These sessions are ideal for homeowners, renters, and anyone interested in reducing wildfire risk at home and in their neighborhoods.
-“Kids’ Safety Camp,” featuring interactive games, safety demonstrations, and firefighter meet-and-greets
-Vendor Village will showcase real-world products and services along with specialists offering fire-resistant building materials, home retrofit solutions, defensible landscaping guidance, and emergency supply kits.
-demonstrations from a wide range of public safety and community organizations, including the LAFD, LAPD, MySafe:LA, LA Recreation and Parks, and other local and regional partners.
-free lunch & admission to the Autry

We’ll also be talking about this important topic at the next ERNC meeting, please come to that if you’re interested in learning more! Tuesday July 8, 7p at Eagle Rock City Hall.
