Born and raised in Buffalo, NY, Dr. Jessica Zak originally came to California for her internship and residency program at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. Upon completion of her residency, Dr. Zak’s sense of adventure, love of sunshine and commitment to helping the children in this community encouraged her to set roots in LA. A summa cm laude graduate from the State University of New York at Buffalo, Dr. Zak completed her undergraduate education in Biomedical Sciences with a minor in Pharmacology and Toxicology before earning a Master of Science degree in Physiology and Biophysics with a specialization in Complementary and Alternative Medicine from Georgetown University. In addition to working at Westside Pediatrics, she works in the Emergency Room at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, treating and caring for children with colds to critical illnesses when they are most in need. This specialized knowledge and training has allowed Dr. Zak to take a global view when treating each individual patient, combining traditional pediatric medicine with complementary therapies to achieve optimal health in all areas of life including nutrition, lifestyle and disease prevention. Dr. Zak lives by the beach and enjoys exercising and staying active, trying new restaurants and spending time with family and friends.

Good morning! We thought it would be helpful to share our thoughts on the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak. Although it has not hit North America yet, with it now spreading into Western Europe it is likely on its way and we want you to be as informed as possible. (UPDATE: Unfortunately, as expected, it is now spreading in multiple states)

Approximately 20% of the common colds we experience seasonally are coronaviruses. This viral family is nothing new, but over the years two strains have emerged that were more concerning. SARS and MERS had mortality rates of 9.5 and 34.5%, respectively. Fortunately these did not become widespread and have been contained. Unfortunately, we now have COVID-19 and it appears to be more easily spread and therefore harder to contain. Its origin is unclear and up for debate, as has been the quality of the data provided by China, but now we have numbers from outside of China (that are consistent with China's reports) and we have included them below for your review.

Current mortality statistics based on best available prelim data:
• average overall mortality rate 2.3%
• history of high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, chronic lung disease, or cancer is 5-10%
• no history of chronic disease

Emily Bruckner Krasnow was born and raised in Sherman Oaks, California. Growing up as the daughter, niece, and sister of pediatricians, taking care of children and families has been a part of her life for as long as she can remember. She graduated Suma Cum Laude from Duke University with a Bachelors of Science in Psychology and Neuroscience. She completed her medical training at UCLA School of Medicine, where she was selected to be a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society. She then went on to complete her internship and residency in Pediatrics at Children's Hospital of Los Angeles, where her parents, uncle, and brother had all trained before her. After residency, she worked at Tribeca Pediatrics in Venice, California, before very happily joining the Westside Pediatrics team in 2015. She lives in Mar Vista with her husband David, her two beautiful step-sons Hayden and Landon, and her giant step-pet, Duchess the pot-bellied pig.
