UPDATE on COVID-19 in pets

See attached link for more Information about COVID-19 and pets involvement .

Basically, there was a dog in Hong Kong who tested weak positive for the virus. That dog is in quarantine but not exhibiting any symptoms consistent with COVID-19. They are continuing to monitor and test. There is some speculation that it may have been environment contamination that caused the weak positive. Historically in dogs corona virus has caused intestinal disease (diarrhea) and not respiratory disease. It is also a different subset of corona virus (alpha versus beta in COVID-19).

Recommendations at this time is if you are infected with COVID-19 and must care for your pet wash hands before and after interactions and wear a face mask. If your dog is sick and has been around a person infected with COVID 19 do NOT take your pet to a veterinary hospital. Instead contact the public health official working with that person's case. If they feel there is risk then they can set up an appropriate quarantine area before you enter a veterinary hospital to reduce any potential spread to people or other dogs, until they can determine if the dog is infected.

Sadly we had to euthanize the raccoon last night. He started having seizures. Apparently there is an outbreak of distemper virus in raccoons in this area. Sad little guy. Feel good he didn't suffer and had a great last meal.

Just face timed with one of my favorite patients, Unii, the chinchilla and his parents. We have been through a lot of teeth problems over the years. He has been such a little trooper. Tonight I got to say goodbye as he was passing. Feel lucky to have been there with them. Farewell to the coolest little grey fluff ball. RIP Unii.
