📍 its middle child day! I was quoted in an article on MSN about “Funny posts about middle children” — sharing some insights from my work as a pediatric neuropsychologist on birth order and middle child experiences 👇

📰 “While ‘Middle Child Syndrome’ suggests that middle children may feel overlooked or develop unique traits like diplomacy or independence, research is inconclusive, and the impact of birth order varies widely across families,” I explain. “Each family structure is different, and it depends on the temperament, learning style, and resilience of the child.”

🤫 Silence is a skill—and it’s worth teaching to both children and adults.

Background music during classroom silent reading often looks calming—but it doesn’t always support learning.

I’ve been doing many classroom observations lately and am noticing a growing use of spa-type music during silent sustained reading. While well-intentioned, this added sensory layer can quietly interfere with focus and comprehension—especially for neurodiverse learners. Silence, or individualized sensory supports, tends to work better than one-size-fits-all music.

✨silence is golden. Let’s stop overstimulating our kids.

🧠 Does Your Child Need a Neuropsych Tune-Up? If your child’s has been tested but their neuropsych report is 3+ years old, it may no longer tell the full story.

What a pleasure to enjoy time with Susan Stiffelman on her podcast!

In this episode, I talk with neuropsychologist Dr. Rita Eichenstein about what she calls the parent brain — how becoming a parent literally reshapes our brains, rewiring us for empathy, resilience, multitasking, and emotional intelligence. Dr. Eichenstein and I explore how understanding these changes can help us see parenthood as a distinct and deeply meaningful stage of human development, and appreciate the brain’s incredible capacity to grow and adapt through love and caregiving. https://go.susanstiffelman.com/parent-brain-podcast

🙏🔆Embracing Neurodiversity with Compassion 🌈

As neurodiversity becomes more welcomed and normalized, it’s important to remember that raising a neurodiverse child still comes with moments of challenge, uncertainty, and deep emotional growth for parents.

In Not What I Expected, I wrote:

“Parenthood invites us into the unknown, where our children become our greatest teachers—especially when they don’t fit the mold we imagined.”

Acceptance doesn’t erase the complexity of the journey, but it opens the door to understanding, resilience, and connection. Every child deserves to be seen for who they truly are—and every parent deserves grace as they learn to see differently. 💛

💞 The Bond That Shapes Us
There is a moment — quiet, almost invisible — when a parent and child lock eyes, and something ancient stirs.
It’s not just love. It’s biology, memory, and soul
Because in the end, love isn’t taught.
It’s co-regulated, neuron to neuron, heart to heart. 💫
